The U.S. Military phased out steel fuel cans over 30 years ago. Since 1990, they all are plastic:

Secure it properly with a bungee STRAP and you will be fine. Should be no interference from the 5er

He also asked for options in the second paragraph which can be interpreted as either options of where to find a metal one, or options for fuel cans since he can't find any metal ones....take your pick

I am putting my diesel in the nose compartment of the 5th wheel for security reasons only. Don't need them walking way or someone adding extra additives to the cans when I am not at the truck.

I got some Israeli IDF surplus nato cans on ebay. Very good quality. Nozzle not legal in some states but you can buy almost anything on eBay anyway.
They are sturdy, but the nato nozzles can drip a little when using them. So if that is an issue for you, stay with the newer plastic cans. I don't like having to hold the button in on those new nozzles.
They do seal closed very well.

I just used DuckDuckGo and got 1 billion hits on Jerry cans. Plastic, steel, stainless steel (expensive but very nice) options abound. Jerry cans are all going to look similar. So if you are having trouble finding one that looks decent, you may want to consider other options. I carry extra diesel and gasoline in VP race cans. No EPA garbage and thicker than regular plastic cans. Just get red ones so they'll fill them in NJ.

Metal fuel cans are out of favor due to their tendency to rust at seams with the exception of expensive stainless steel cans.
Plastic has been in use for decades and does very well. Come in all shapes and sizes to fit all needs and desires.

Despite all the concern about ballooning red plastic containers (my hot shed is full of them), I have never had one fail. I think I have at least six out there, same 6 in past 20 years. I just bleed the excess pressure by slowly opening spout before pouring.

If you didn't install a vent from tractor supply... ...you can always drill a tiny hole (smallest drill bit) in the nozzle cap. No more swelling. I think every can on the farm has this 'mod'

That was my first thought when I read this thread. The only folks who actually want a metal can are those who have never had to use one
Or the metal cans fit the rack on their jeep

It's the retro 'cool factor'! I am not spending 100 bucks per can, as cool as I am! BTW, your vent you drilled: Doesn't it allow the gas to evaporate over time?

Never felt the need to drill vent holes. Fill to fill line, squeeze "can" to remove excess air, can will expand or contract with temp. No vapor lost.
Actually, gasoline in a vented container can loose the " light ends" that help with winter starting. Gasoline has many boiling points in it's blend and lowest evaporate first.
