Sometimes the 5 gallon metal "jerry cans" can be found at military surplus stores.

I purchased 4 jerry cans from them several years ago. They are the best that money can buy. Built to NATO specs, two piece design that is welded down the center. There are fake chinese knock-offs so beware.

They are painted on the inside so rusting is not an issue.

I have 2 red cans for fuel and 2 yellow for diesel. Mine are Wavian branded and I notice they don't have these brands currently on their website and they now spec a different brand "GELG" which is a step down from the Wavian brand. Wavian Jerry Cans are the best cans on the market!

Besure to purchase the optional flexible pour spout, it's much faster than the old versions that used to come with the jerry cans.

I agree with the dual fuel idea and use propane as my primary source when using my generator. But having an older F150 and only a 25 gallon tank I am always concerned with running out of gas when hauling our trailer. So I decided I needed to keep a gas container with me just in case.

I ended up getting a RotoPaX 3 Gallon Fuel Container which I keep in my semi-enclosed pickup bed. It is much thicker than regular plastic gas containers and it has a special mounting bracket which I installed on the rib of the bed wall.

It can be stored horizontally; but, even so, I will always keep it upright. These containers are used for safely transporting fuel on ATVs/Off-Road Vehicles and designed to withstand related abuse.

On the downside, RotopaX containers are a little pricey; but, after considering safety above everything else, I think it was a good decision not having to worry as much as using a standard thin plastic fuel container that would have a high probability of rupturing if overheated or in a wreck.

If you're looking for something that is safe, this is just another option to consider.

I haul six 6-gallon red plastic gas containers in the front of my truck bed, locked in place with a pair of ratchet nylon straps, when I'm double-towing my fifth wheel and boat. No issues. They can't be in an enclosed area without having special ventilation and grounding considerations, to prevent fires or explosions, so keep them out of your fifth wheel. You could consider putting them on a bike rack on the rear of the camper, but I'm not comfortable with the idea of them back there while driving roads with today's distracted (and easily road-raged) drivers.

The equivalent to a WWII can is a NATO can. They are still made in Eastern Europe and I purchased one a few years ago on eBay to carry in the external Gear Deck enclosure on the rear class V hitch receiver on my 2012 Forest River Solera motorhome. It holds 20 liters of Diesel. I also bought a spout and spare gaskets. As for NATO, they have gone to plastic cans. I use four JustRite safety cans at home for my lawn equipment and generator. Only plastic cans I have are for my 1954 Johnson 10 HP outboard motor.

Mine has held up very well. Still works good as new and no leaks.

I’d like to find one in a one or two gallon size. The release lever on the handle works so well you could put just eight ounces of gas into a weed eater or chainsaw and not spill a drop.
