Glass cover on stove exploded

We recently purchased a 2019 26' Coachman Apex 251RBK. On our last trip the glass top over the stove was in it's bi-fold state when a pot of water was put on the front burner and the pilot lit. I quickly realized a portion of the flame was touching a tiny portion of the edge of the glass and I put the cover into it's full off position. About a minute later the entire glass top splintered with many particles of glass. Has anyone else had this experience?

We have an Apex as well, we never use the stove with the glass down at all, we push it into the folded position back against the wall. I could easily understand that the glass could be destroyed by allowing the range flame to get too close to the glass. Hopefully you can hit up a hardware store and get a piece of glass cut for a lot less than buying from the dealer.

Not sure if this would replace it, you may have to call and ask questions.

That is "Tempered Glass" you're not going to find that at a hardware store. You'd need a specialty glass shop that knows how to cut and treat tempered glass or contact a dealer for a new one.
The replacements that Larry posted would work. Looks like they're from same company.

Any good glass shop can cut and grind annealed glass and send it off and have it tempered. It's usually cheaper than buying a replacement from and RV place or the OEM.

MDW turned on the front burner without lifting the glass. It exploded. Contacted furion directly. $100.00 bucks and twenty minutes of install time. Issue. Resolved

We've done that a few times because our stove at home has a flat glass electric stovetop. It hasn't exploded yet so we're more cautious now. We hope.

We had our front over door glass shatter on our 2019 Micro-lite 21fbrs. I was told Suburban Stoves had a batch of bad glass and they replaced our entire oven.

My DW turned on the burner without lifting the glass. KaBoom. Glass everywhere. We just removed the remainder and haven't replaced it. Don't know if we will. They are available from several RV parts places, and probably from Amazon. Would love to hear where you get one in case we decide to fix it.

Replacement stove top cover

My second TT didn't have a stovetop that could be used as a cover and additional prep area. I got a metal cover that worked the same as the glass does. This worked well for me. You just have to be sure that you don't accidentally turn the gas on. That Rv was totaled, but I saved the topper. I'm keeping it, just incase. but you can get it at https://www.google.com/search?q=rv+g...hrome&ie=UTF-8.

The manufacturing process for the glass used in the covers as well as the decorative glass bowl in the bathroom sinks induces tremendous molecular stresses in the glass. Small flaws or stresses in the wrong place can cause them to explode. You might consider a non glass cover.

Much better than metal is a bamboo cutting board equipped with feet to make it fit atop the grid above burners. For feet we used plasic shower rod ends from Walmart that can be glued or screwed on the bottom for a snug fit.

It can be easily lifted off for use of burners and still available for cutting.

Mine has a glass cover. It doesn’t fit correctly (I think the countertop or cabinet is about 1/8” out of square or something). I also think it is/was a curb appeal type adder when they changed to these. I am scared of breaking mine so I am gentile with it(in only used the stove top a few times)...mostly used for storage an dish drying rack.

The first TT we bought had a nice stove cover, which I didn't properly value at the time. I twas just a piece of corian counter top cut to the size of the stove. The back had a simple rubber backer on it that was almost like a contact paper or that rubber matting some people put in their cupboards. It was just enough to keep it from sliding around on the stove.

Glass when exposed to sudden heat or cold will thermo cycle. This causes it to break, and in the case of tempered glass to explode quite dramatically. BTW, tempered glass is also extremely fragile on its edges so be careful hitting the edges with anything hard.

Then we will get posts “my bamboo cutting board caught fire”. Haha.

eBay sells the glass stove top for 98.00 , mine also shattered for no real reason, but I got mine replaced through Coachmen’s. It’s just a bad design by Dometic.

Well I just got off the phone with Furrion. Sounds like this is a common occurrence, the tps are currently on backorder but they will be sending me a new one when they come in as I am still within the 12 month warranty period

Certainly could be a common occurrence but may also be a product of Covid-19.

Lots of companies are unable to either manufacture or source parts as rapidly as before due to shutdowns.

FWIW, I've been able to dodge this problem. I'm pretty much the only one that uses the stove, being s single guy. For the most part the cover stays up while I'm parked as I have a counter extension for prep work if needed.

Amazing how "the guy who has to fix things" tends to be a lot more careful than the "person that just uses it".
