Going out west

I live in Salisbury NC . Want to go out west this year . What would be the best time to go to miss the snow in the south. I want to leave in mid April . My friend want to leave the first of March, but I think that the middle of April . Then I’m going to do the northern route to finish and then home . I’m retired so no time limit .

What route? On I-10 you should be fine most any time. On I-40 i've seen it snow on April 1 in Amarillo, but that is very rare and will clear quickly. I'm leaving Dallas for California in mid March, traveling I-20 to I-10 and on west.

As long as your friends last name isn't Donner you'll be fine.

Stay south of the Mason/Dixon line until at least June. Then follow the sun north as the temps suit you.

Believe it or not, we saw snow at the END of April in Amarillo. This picture was from April 30:

But, otherwise- I actually agree with this. I've driven I-10 from California to Florida without incident in January. I think March should be fine.

It's still going to be quite chilly a lot of places that early, though.

Going out west

Here is the route we did Mid-Jan to Mid-March. We just watched the weather and were prepared to turn south if needed. We did just that when Santa Fe, NM got several inches of snow. We never had to drive in snow but we did see snow on the ground, not the roads. We also had some pretty cold nights. The National Parks were amazing and best part, no crowds!

Here is our post trip report.
