I was one who in the past said to use them, just follow the directions of pump the grease gun slowly and make sure to keep turning the tire and wheel while doing so.
That was then, and this is now:
Do yourself a favor and Don't Use Them.
I followed directions and just replaced all of my brake assemblies due to the grease getting past the rear grease seal. It doesn't take much pressure to get grease to push through a small thin flexible rubber seal mated to a baby butt smooth metal axle. It is far easier for the grease to push through the seal than push a 3" load of old grease forward to the end of the open axle.
Good news is that I really wanted self adjusting brakes on my 5th wheel and now I have them.
To do the job right, take the time and pack them by hand. It also allows the prefect opportunity to check the bearings, seals, axles and brake parts.
Now go get greasy!!!
