Griddle sits too high...

I have a new 2020 Flagstaff super light that came with the Suburban Griddle they are now shipping with. The picture below is a stock photo of the Blackstone 17" griddle that looks exactly like the Suburban.

On my first (and only ) camping trip this year it was windy and cold out while I was trying to cook breakfast. It took me 30+ minutes to cook up some pancakes and sausage. The problem was the wind kept blowing the heat out from under the griddle. If you look at the picture the griddle base sits a good 3/4" above the body of the unit. I could feel all the heat blowing out the down wind side. I tried using a cookie sheet to block the wind. I changed were I stood. I'm sure if you ever cooked outside you've had this problem.

So I'm looking for a better solution. I really want to lower the griddle base down. I thought about drilling out the holes the base sits in and then getting some washers to adjust the height as needed. But before I take the drill out I thought I seek some suggestions. I think my first try I might just roll up some aluminum foil and wedge it into the gap. Getting some sheet metal to form a "U" shaped wind guard seems like I would end up cutting myself somehow.

On edit: I should mention my Suburban griddle mounts to the trailer so moving it somewhere else isn't really practical.

Thanks
Jim M.

There are a number of threads on the Blackstone. A popular solution is to purchase a hose extension and move the griddle anywhere you want. I believe the extensions run about $20. Many don't like cooking so close to the RV. Search the threads and you'll find some links for amazon and elsewhere. Others put foil or cookie sheet around the griddle.

People here have had success with both of your ideas with the foil or sheet metal. I use foil around the back and sides hold it in place with magnets. Hope that helps.

Problem solved....

Blackstones have the same issue. I bought a couple of welding magnets and use them to hold some aluminum foil in place covering the gap on the up wind side.
I've also seen people who have used heavier gauge aluminum to make permanent wind blocks. A search of the Blackstone threads will show a few solutions.
Personally, lowering the griddle may cause other problems...

My wife loves the Dollar Tree. Might need to check one out and see if they have such items. Looks like a cool idea. Easy to store, cheep and portable.

Thanks

I had the same problem as the OP. Just look on Amazon, they make a lid for the 17" Blackstone griddle like mine. Worth every penny. Keeps the rain off too. Might fit the Suburban.Click image for larger version

All of the suggestion work, just be sure to not make it airtight, hss been some reports of heat build up that warps yohr griddle top. Foil and magnets on the 22 and a fold jp 3 peice masonite surround for the 17 while camping. Cook more bacon and enjoy.

Checked the Dollar Tree web site and didn't find these, so I got to thinking (usually a bad idea )
I'm going to try using some unfinished aluminum step flashing. Easy to bend to fit around the griddle edges and easy to cut to just the right size. Bonus that I already have some in the garage.

the lid, at least on my 22", does not block the air flow so the problem still exists. Great idea for the magnets and foil of piece of AL.

Jim, the Suburban doesn't have little legs like in your pic to allow you to put it on picnic table or somewhere that is blocked from wind? FYI, they sell folding wind shields for outdoor stoves that may help.

I have had good luck with this table from Amazon. 17 inch fits perfect. Stops wind really well.

Did you hook the griddle up to the low pressure propane line coming from the RV or did you have a 1lb canister attached? A Blackstone won't work properly if you try to run it from the low pressure RV line through the Blackstones regulator.

This isn't my trailer, or the best picture but you can see the Suburban looks identical to the Blackstone. Assumption is they are making it for Suburban. So yes it has the 4 little legs on the bottom. It also comes with the brackets that allows it to slide onto the arms that mount to the trailer. I'm one of those guys who is OK with hanging it off the trailer. Only complaint is that they always seem to mount the grill/griddle too high up, and in not the best spots. But for now good.

I'll have to see if any of those wind shields will fit and/or can be attached to the mount brackets to keep it in place.

On edit: the Suburban model is design to be attached directly to the trailers Propane port. I forget if there is a regulator on the back of it, but whatever is back there plugs directly in.

Thanks
Jim M.

If that's what it's designed for, it won't have it's own regulator.

So again, not my actual griddle. I've probably spent more time searching google for pictures than it would have taken to go outside and pull the griddle out of my trailer to snap few shots.

For FYI:
This is the back end of the Suburban griddle. Not sure if that is a regulator or not on it. Many (Most? All?) of the Rockwood/Flagstaff MiniLites & SuperLites come with a propane quick connect under the side of the trailer somewhere (usually near a tire, go figure) that is connected to the main propane line running under the trailer. I'm not sure if that line is considered high, medium, or low pressure.

My 2018 Minilite came with the stock cheapo grill that you can get on Amazon for $80.

From the factory my 2020 Flagstaff SuperLite came with the Suburban Griddle, a Forest River spatula, and a 3' quick connect hose. So its all plug-n-play.

I'm not up on how the propane side of things works. Electrical, Pluming, Mechanical sure no problem. I haven't had to deal with propane for the most part. Does the Furnace & hot water heater require a higher pressure and there is a secondary regulator on the griddle?

Anyway this was more for informational use. It was clearly the wind causing my issues, and hopefully FR kn ows how to setup the griddle that comes stock with the trailer.

Thanks
Jim M.

Very strange, that certainly looks like a regulator. Which in my understanding, will severely impede gas flow coming from a source (like the quick connect under your trailer)which is already low pressure. The regulator is connected to the propane tank(s) on most RV's, so all propane supplied to all RV appliances is already low pressure.

OK, well I'm going to hijack my own thread .

Now I'm confused. I went out and took pictures of my setup. Again, nothing fancy. Pure stock from the factory 3 months ago. They ship many many of these so they know what they are doing?

NJKris, I think your GeoPro is built in the same factory so this should be similar (if you have dual tanks and a extra port).

The first picture is of the dual tank switch & 2 stage regulator combo. You can get this model off ebay for like $50. I can not find specs on the output but it seems to be the "standard" 11" WC.
https://www.rvupgradestore.com/Two-S...-p/66-8631.htm

The second picture is of the propane port under the trailer. Just a "T" off the main line.

The third picture is a close up of the item on the back of the griddle. Not only is it a regulator, its a regulator specifically for Suburban Stoves
https://www.rvupgradestore.com/Subur...-p/41-1021.htm

The only thing I can kinda see is that the second regulator may be 10" WC. Would they really care about 11" vs 10"? Perhaps the main regulator is too high flow and this second on is a safety?

Well if any one has an answer I'm listening. Guess its time to learn more about propane. I should probably post this in the appliance forum.

Damn sideways pictures..... There was a fix mention, need to find that.

Thanks
Jim M.
