Harvest Hosts experience?

In the past few months, we have had cancelations of several confirmed reservations by the Hosts (3 out of 5 reservations). The reasons range from incomplete construction to owner vacation. I guess they will go to any length to get out of hosting us! It used to be, this was a great to boondock.

I'm curious about others recent experience with Harvest Hosts. It's time to renew and I'm on the fence about renewing

That’s crazy, It will be interesting to see what others have experienced . I’ve only had 1 campground cancel in 30+ years of camping and it was due to storm damage.

I'm not sure you can easily compare and HH host with an actual campground. We have had excellent luck with the HH program. In fact, we just re-upped and added Boondockers Welcome.

Most HH hosts run small business/farms at their hosting site...that is their primary focus and source of income. Campgrounds rent space as their primary focus/income. It stands to reason that a campground's business systems and infrastructure for campers would be much more robust that those of an HH host's.

When we joined HH, we easily realized this difference and adjusted our planning to minimize the unexpected. But, "stuff" happens! Our process is to book as far ahead as their calendar allows (see note below), then check in with them a month or so before our stay. We then check in with the host a week ahead of our stay, and then again the day before. Can't have too much communication in this process!

Note: We've noticed that a fair number of hosts don't open up their online calendars as far ahead of time as we would prefer. This spring we've had good luck making the request anyway and, sure enough, they approved the request ahead of their open calendar. This is one reason why we do the 30/7/1 day check in process; we make sure our reservation is, in fact, on the books.

We've had HH for a year now, and have yet to use them. I think the program is great, and even bought Golf access (to increase available spots in full/high demand campground areas), but we've simply not taken advantage of our membership. Partially this is due to our limited ability to camp (we're roaming from home, with full time careers that can't be from the road), and partially due to the DW's ability (and willingness) to book campgrounds a long ways out.

So, I'm on the fence about renewing, figuring the program will always be there for us, and that any cost increase would be defrayed by not holding a membership when we're not using it.

Kinda bummed about this, to be honest.

Theo, how often are you using/taking advantage of your HH membership?

We love it. Stayed at some wineries and some farms. Lot nicer views than campgrounds. Just added the boondockers welcome. The downside of HH is the one night limit. We like to explore where we're at and more time would be needed but along a road trip, one night works. The BW allow more than a single night so that's a plus.

My wife and I have had great success with HH on our first road trip earlier this year. We booked several weeks ahead of schedule and had no issue. Most of the comments made by others who had stayed at each reservations were acccurate. We added Boondockers Welcome to our HH membership as well.

This is our 4th season with HH and we've never had an issue, and only once couldn't get a reservation because the site, a winery, was booked for a wedding. We love it.

Thanks for everyone's comments. We've been using Harvest Hosts for about 4 years and prior years were great. Maybe this year is just an unusual year.
