Hey Aintgotnun! Check out the moon tonight 23 Dec 07
Noticed this tonight while walking the dog...
If you can get a clear view of the full moon tonight, which is pretty cool in itself, you will see a bright object close to the moon and at about 5 o'clock in relation to the moon.
It does not appear to be a star as it isn't white enough, but red/yellow in color.
Go outside, have a look and let's figure out what it is.
HURRY! IT MAY NOT BE THERE TOMORROW!
Greg...break out the 'scopes and tell us what it is!

I believe it's Mars. My wifes aunt told me it's the most visible xmas eve. I hope to check it out.

Very Clear here tonight and I called Greg I see it and he said it was mars about to eclipse the moon.
VERY COOL!!!!

Cant see Mars but a shot of the moon from my patio using my cheap camera.

Yep, it's Mars. And with the moon soo bright right now it would wash out Mars using my scopes.
It is cool though.

well I had to break out the big scope and show the in-laws......
with some filters I was able to get Mars in but it was still washed out a bit

That's cool.
The DW and I were leaving my sister's house earlier and we noticed it right off.
I tried to take a photo with my digital camera but the brightness of the Moon washes it out.
Sure is pretty though.

It looks spectacular from ND. The moon has a halo around it caused by the ice crystals in the air. Mars is just off to the side, and can be seen with the naked eye. Looks much nicer with the monoc or binoculars. I'm too lazy to get out the scope....it's 4 degrees as well.

Here is one version showing Mars but the moon is washed out, and the second with the moon well exposed but Mars is not showing up here.

Darn! I was too busy baying at the moon to notice Mars! I'll have to try to see it tonight, if I can control myself!

Mars in the evening - Venus in morning
Yep, it is Mars and this is the brightest it will be for a few years, but it is not as bright as it was back a few years. I could see the polar caps and some terain features through my 16" Dob back then. Too busy to get it out sofar this time.
Also, you ought to check out Venus in the morning. It is extremely bright.
