Hot water heater coachmen catalina 261BH

How often do you need to drain the hot water heater?I thought I was told everytime but now hearing otherwise. If its ok to not do everytime where does this fall into the order of breaking down camp bc I know you should turn Off the switch and purge it right? So at our site this weekend we disconnecting water then electric then connect to tow vehicle. Had to drive out to main road and do black/gray flush as it was not at site. Do you pull plug and drain hot water heater at site? At storage? Or as you are going down the road? There was more water than I expected but not a great deal. Just trying to learn when and where (and how often) this needs to be done.
Thanks.

Between use I will run the hot water in the outside shower to flush and change the water in the tank. Usually around two week intervals. This keeps the water from getting the sulfur smell and the camper ready to go.

It can also depend on the water. Well water with lots of minerals will react very badly with some heater tanks.
