Hot water tank mistake

Dumb mistake but turned on hot water electric thinking it was full but I had the bypass on. Electric is not working (warms only not hot) but gas is ok. Can I replace electric heating elements or do I need to replace the unit. Also what is the best way to access on 35rok sandpiper. Thanks

More then likely you burned the electric heating element and will need to replace it but not the whole unit.

You can replace the element, but it depends on what brand water heater you may have, as to how hard a job.

Do you know if it's a Suburban or Atwood brand (a pic would easily show which if you don't know)

Suburban elements are in the front of the water heater (easy to replace) while Atwoods are accessed from the rear (more difficult)

Another way to differentiate brands possibly, is where the switch was for the electric heating element (inside the RV or outside on the face of the water heater)

Thanks for the help. I haven’t got to the heater yet. Still trying to figure best way to get at it. Electric switch on/off is outside next to drain plug.

OK, that tells us it's a Suburban brand. Easy enough.

Here's what you need:

Or virtually any Home Depot or Lowes for under $10.

Water Heater

Don't worry happens to all of us at some time or another. I had one burn out about 3 years ago and went on a Sunday afternoon to get part at RV dealer. Bought the part and then walked out on lot and bought a new 5vr so beware. Part shopping can be expensive.

If you had gone to the lot first it would have saved you a few bucks.

When hooking up hook the water up and bleed the air from the water heater before hooking up the electric to the coach. Or you can keep the switch by the drain off until the air is blead from the tank.

Lowe's also has a 10% Vet's benefit, and a 5% in-house credit card you can get if you're not a vet. And if you order online (even for stock items for in-store pickup), you can get another one per cent from Ebates. Ebates is also good for Walmart and eBay online orders and hundreds of other locations. I use their browser add-on which pops up to remind me when it can be used.

Full-disclosure: I get a little from Ebates if you let me refer you.

Just double checking, you closed the bypass valve correct? Not just opened the inlet/outlet valves.

By-pass valve got me from Winterizing. I forgot to flip back. It was the first trip out ( this season) and I was checking everything else and missed that. Should have know when it didn’t take long to fill tank. 30 plus years of camping and I made a rookie move. Ended up getting element at Walmart $12.00. Haven’t changed it yet. Thanks again

If you don't have one you may still need the wrench. Special thin walled goodie..

Been there done that. Plenty of videos on U-tube to replace the element. It's fairly easy but you will have to remove the gas line that's in your way. The wrench for this is a pain in the rear, but it will work. Good luck.

Be aware that the 2 brands use a different element as materials are different in tank.
