how do you upload a photo/icon on your status page?
So after all this time I have finally updated my profile status . But how do you upload a photo/icon by your name ?

Go to you user CP, then edit avatar down the left side of that page, then "choose file" under "custom avatar". You may need to shrink the photo before downloading it.
