Sorry, Costco fills my tanks, even my 100 pounder for my park model. No exchange.
The local corner store exchange is rip off $30 for 20 lbs..

Jim, you are most welcome. Believe me, you are not the only one that has been told this misinformation. I don't think the ones who actually work at the exchanges have a clue that they are relaying false and misleading information on the 80% fill levels. It sounds plausible but isn't accurate.

If you really read all the legal stuff about Blue Rhino and Amerigas, it may make you not want to ever do business with them. They are the ones who intentionally spread this false and misleading fill rate stuff in my opinion....as cover for their illegal collusion and/or not filling the tanks.

Here is the actual FTC complaint that really has the nitty gritty. Paragraph 21 even explains that 20 pound cylinders are manufactured to hold 25 pounds of propane but only 20 pounds is what goes in them due to the 20% expansion space and the OPD.

The more of our members who fully understand what is correct, can maybe counteract the false and misleading information that is being promulgated out there about this.....or we can hope.

We have (2) 30#tanks,travel with Refer ON Auto,cook most meals on propane stove,travel MOSTLY (Spring and Fall) so furnace PRE heat also comes into play! We Don't use (1) 30# tank a YEAR! Average over (120+) days a year. Our FULL 30# tanks weight 58# each. I could use (1) 20# and (1) 30# then I could just (Trade the 20# for Fill up) but we pay (10.00$ for 20# refill and 30.00$ for 30# refill at Home,we have NEVER needed propane refill on the Road and some trips are (60+ days). Only (1) tank ON at a Time! Youroo!!

I would get a 2 x plank about 5'-6' long and hook it on the door opening and "walk" or semi roll the tanks in/out of the compartments.

Here is the skinny. What we call a 20 or 30 used to be called a 5 gal or 7 1/2 gal tank. Well at about 4.23 lbs per gal both were or are just estimates. The spit or bleeder valve ( the little screw) starts to spit when liquid reaches the 80% point in the volume of the tank. Used to be that was at the tank rated gallonage or a bit more. Now the automatic shut off valves seem to take a bit of tank space and if they say your tank took the full 5 or 7.5 gal they are probably in need of a visit from Weights And Measure enforcement because 5 will just not go in a 5 any more. That auto safety is not in the big tanks I use for hot air balloon, so care is required to avoid over filling/over pressure, but in 5 and 7.5 the safety valves prevent over fill and allow that even an untrained monkey can do the refueling.

Wow they told me the one costco I know of that sells in Southern California was under $2.00 a gal or 4.23 pounds Considering that things might not be cheap generally up in Halifax that sounds pretty good. Locally the best price I have is $2.99 plus 8 % sales tax
