We lost power around 5:00 or so yesterday afternoon. By 6:00, it was still out so I pulled the Vengeance out and had it set up in about 30 minutes. We then brought out all the fridge items to the camper fridge and chilled out with some fried bologna sandwiches and some Santitas with salsa. The Coke Zero was ice cold. I was happy as a clam.

Then the power came back on around 8:30 or so. Dang.

Hurricane Florence (merge of several Hurricane Florence Threads)

I just got a text from a neighbor and said the power was off for only about half hour earlier today. Seems to be on and stable now.

The power is still off at my house. We have county water and it’s off. We left for Pigeon Forge today, water rushing across I-40 was pushing me around some in places, I never said anything to DW. It was a little scary, had DW known she may have freaked out

Some things are best kept to yourself, without a doubt.

Hope your house fairs ok.

Sometimes it's better not to share all of your observations. Just be cautious and go forward.

Power has been out since midnight so the generator is getting a work out. Rain bands and wind, worse today than yesterday.

Just for the record I-40 has been closed between I-95 and Wilmington, NC.

Along with quite a few secondary roads. I live in Western Harnett County just north of Fort Bragg and we have closures all the way around us. I am supposed to be at my office in Apex to work on Monday, but based on what I am seeing it ain't happening. NC 87 is closed just south of Sanford due to a blown dam, I-95 is closed from near the VA border almost to Fayetteville and again in SC near Dillon. They had some signed detours on US 301 but now some of those are closed too.

I would seriously consider staying in TN for a few days until this thing is gone and it starts drying out.

Here is a link to the NCDOT road information page, you can search it by county, route or region and see the closures. Need to scroll towards the bottom to get the main map.

We are ok. Onslow County and the other coastal counties took a heck of a beating with the storm surge and now inland flooding. The county is currently cut off due to all roads coming in flooded, probably will clear in a few days. 81 hours with no power and counting. It probably wouldnt have been so bad here if the stupid thing hadn't stopped just as we got the eye wall, ask for directions and the meander its way out of here to the west. I recorded tropical force winds or stronger for over 36 hours. Somebody forgot to tell Florence that hurricanes don't turn left.
Lost some trees but very very minor structure damages to any of the families homes and All 4 legged and 2 legged criiters alive and well. Thats all thats matter. Much much luckier than many.

Made it home, I’m tired of driving 450 miles in a day. People I care about are cut off from me. People I know still don’t have power, I’m tired of hurricanes knocking out my electric. I’m getting a whole house generator that comes on when the electric goes off. Three storms that each was worse that the one before, Floyd, Matthew and now Florence. All storms of the century. I didn’t think we would ever have a hurricane that was worse than Floyd, wrong we had two more and each worse

Other Experience

From my experience living through several typhoons on Guam, including a Cat 4/5 that moved 60 foot Quonset huts like chess pieces, typhoons/hurricanes are not fun. I also spent five years in the Aleutian Islands of Southwest Alaska with its Birthplace of the Winds climate, often seeing winds in excess of 75 knots.

What we did, too late for Florence, but might be involved in recovery planning, was to build concrete piers at least 5’ deep, 18” square with multi-ton eye bolts imbedded into the piers on each side of the unit, spaced about 10-15’ apart. At least two per side. They then used 10-20,000 pound straps to tie down the buildings and equipment not anchored to block or monolith foundations. This, of course, doesn’t help with flooding issues, just blowing metal boxes. This fix stopped the units from moving and destroying plumbing and electrical connections.

Hurricane

I know this reply is now late, but I wonder about your insurance company and coverage if you don't move the TT. I have Motorhome and anytime Hurricane is possible I get emails from them wanting to know if MH is in safe location. They will even offer to relocate it if it was not running. Not sure if they would pay off just because you didn't want to move out. Might want to check your small print, that would be a wake up call if they refused to pay when you could have moved it to covered or safer area.

Please let us know how you managed. Wilmington didn’t fair well from what we have heard. We were evacuated from Emerald Isle while we were on vacation and luckily got out before the storm hit.
