I know this poor horse has been flogged before...

but, WTH is with people and the LED lights??? We camped at a park up in the foothills outside of San Diego (you know, a place under the stars!). When we arrived we saw the trailer two sites over had an LED rope light around their trailer and it was "lit". Didn't seem like much while the sun was up but when the sun went down - IT WAS A BLUE SUN!!! We really noticed it as the evening went on but when we went to bed, we found we had to take and cover the windows on their side of our TT with towels to keep from having a blue glow inside our trailer all night. Fortunately, the next day a motorhome pulled into the space between us and we were spared two more nights of the blue sun. Our heart goes out to the folks in that MH who were 20 feet closer to the radiation than we were!

The folks in that TT were there as semi long term campers and we only saw people go into the trailer twice over 4 days. I just have to ask - how do people do that and not realize the impact that has on everyone around them???

Sadly, I think it's not a question of " not realizing", I think it's a question of "don't care."

Just my 2¢

We are seeing the rope light thing quite often, especially in AZ. Folks we have talked to seem to think it keeps the desert rodents at bay. In Tombstone, most of the long term residents had them as they had had a rash of rodent intrusions in their RVs. They claim it stopped it.
Who knows.....

I have heard the same thing in other areas as well.

I would like to hear if it really does work ?

Blue LED lights don't attract bugs. They appear to think the blue lights repel them; which they do not.

I'm certain we've all done something that others have found offensive, but...this is America and people have a choice.

Heading out to the SW in two weeks. Just bought two sets of rope lights for use in southern AZ for the rodents. Figure I might need them in Anza Borrego too.

Anybody have firsthand experience with rodent problems? I've heard they are especially bad near Organ Pipe Cactus NM.

I've also heard that you should open the hood of your vehicle when not in use to discourage the rodents.

I originally bought a set of rope lights to mark the ground for backing into a campsite at night since I often don't have a guide. Have not used them yet.

Normally I would never use these things; I only use the external trailer lights when I'm outside or to find my way back from the rest room. Fortunately, I have a good blackout shade in the bedroom.

We had a kangaroo rat visit us while camped outside of Joshua Tree. We were camping in the teardrop at the time and it's sealed up right so no issues with it. The Tacoma on the other hand...... started the truck one morning and the check engine light was on. PO333 code. Knock sensor. Opened the hood, removed the engine cover and way down in the engine valley was a nest! The rat had chewed the wire harness at the sensor. We limped to my daughter's house and spent two days replacing the harness. The engine cover went into the garbage

In the desert I now:

open the hood when parked

Liberally spray peppermint oil in the engine bay and everywhere there is wiring every few days

And we put cayenne pepper dust in the skid plates

I won't swear these needs work by we spent a month in Anza Borrego after that with zero issues

This works way better than rope lights to deter pests. Both the 4 legged and 2 legged kind!!

Please keep us informed. I've heard that they only work on the African forest elephants, but not the African savannah elephants nor any of the Asiatic elephants.

Under your TT on the ground certainly won't shine in your windows but they will shine in the windows of the units in your vicinity.

I'm not a fan of looking at my neighbor's rope lights while I'm trying to keep my campfire lit with charcoal lighter fluid.
I'm joking about the lighter fluid. I'm baffled about the thought process (or lack of) necessary to think it's ok to hold onto a can of gas and dump it on an open flame.

I must admit that when in the RV park in Tombstone with practically everybody using rope lights under the RVs, it didn't bother us at all. At night we didn't have to use a flashlight to walk around the park. We did feel a little left out though
Once inside our RV we don't notice others outside lights. We always completely black out the bedroom windows with special made towels that DW made so the morning sun doesn't wake us if we are lucky enough to sleep that long.
As far as rodent problems, we have never had any, anywhere. Guess we are lucky. We normally boondock where there is plenty of rodent/animal sign around, but they haven't bothered our RV or TV yet. We don't do anything special to deter them.
I was showing her this thread talking about rope lights and coyote urine to deter rodents. When boondocking in the backwoods for weeks I will urinate outside to save RV water and blacktank space. I decided that is what keeps rodents away from us. DW just rolled her eyes........

I’m going to have to leave the blinds up at night or walk around to find someone doing something I can find a reason to complain about. On my list for next Wednesday
