Illinois RV license

Can anyone tell me what type of license I need to drive a 22000 lb class A motorhome (recreation only) pulling a 4500 lb car through Illinois ???? Do I need a special license, I do not live in Illinois just visiting.
ANY help would be GREAT !!!!!!

Thanks in advance

Illinois used to have an RV plate. IT was kind of a catchy thing it was supposed to be used for those that only use the vehicle a couple of times a year. Many were putting a topper on a truck and getting rv plates. My dad got them for his 67 vw camper but drove it daily. I don't know if the plate still exists or not.

If you own it and are just travelling through Illinois, it is whatever you need in your home state to make you legal. If you do not own the vehicle, and are moving it COMMERCIALLY - that is, being paid to move it, you need a CDL.

Agreed with the above, you need to find out what YOUR class of license allows you to drive.

IN PA we have a class C with allows a max weight of 26,000lbs or combined registered weight of 26,000lbs (so either one vehicle 26k or truck and trailer up to 26k). Over that you need a class A (or non-commercial class A). If your registered weight of the truck AND trailer is over 26k and your trailer weights over 10k you need a class A and medical card. After a certain size you also become a "commercial motor vehicle" even if not commercial. If you are moving commercially you are commercial AND a motorcarrier so federal rules apply.

So as you can see if is very specific to each state, but most are close with the 26K requirements.

nothing special is needed yet . However it would be good if people were required to pass a test to tow , haul anything over 5000lbs or drive anything over say 8000lbs , and 15' length . To many out there that have no clue .but then again so do many car drivers not ave a clue

Google'd it and found this:
https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/p...s/dsd_x142.pdf

Looks like they are similar to us with the 26,001 and over with 10k trailer for CDL... Page one says RV's exempt if used for personal usage... Might want to call the DVD for the trailer or read the rest of their paper..

Here in Massachusetts, you don't need a special license to drive / haul and RV but we do have RV specific license plates that say "camper"across the top.

In Illinois, they have class A, B, C and D. The A, B and C classes follow the CDL class A, B and C. An RV is exempt from CDL requirements of course, however if you RV, truck, camper, etc. falls into those CDL weight categories, you have to get the non-CDL class A, B or C.

Class D is the standard vehicle 16,000 lbs or less class that everyone has.

If you don't live in Illinois (licensed in another state), all of this is meaningless. You just need to be legal with your state's license.

But then government employees would administer the test and grade it, and odds would be astronomical they'd know less than you do about it.

I live in Illinois.
Some 15 years ago I bought a school bus from a mining company that used it to move employees around the property. I converted it into a hunting RV. There are Illinois rules that state what it has to contain to qualify as an RV. I got the plates and all was good with my normal DL. The only thing that would put me out was if it had air brakes. In Illinois that is what changes things.

If you tow it , it should be RT and if you drive it, RV

RT cost less.

We are still a free enough country that we don't need different drivers licenses in each state to drive in them. But maybe that will be next if we don't get some real change soon!

I live in Illinois too. Air brakes may change additional things, however in Illinois for non-CDL licenses, it is weight that changes things. Here is the link to Illinois non-CDL licenses (regular licenses): https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/p...s/dsd_x142.pdf

It is all there on page 4.

True, I was not even respecting safety at that time. At the time I was using blinders to reach my goal of a hunting RV. I was in that twilight of weight. Have grown some since.
