We had a neighbor camper set up 2 Honda 2000s with the exhaust pointed our direction - sounded like a dump truck idiling.

In a good way or otherwise?

It wasn't our favorite part of the trip, which was otherwise serene.

Gotcha!

Wasn't sure if you were referring to a dump truck idiling...

...OR A DUMP TRUCK IDILING!

Were there generator use rules in effect?

If so, did you know about the rules in advance of going there and were the people using them in compliance?

They were using them during the day thank goodness. I suppose I could have asked them to reorient the exhaust but they'd just arrived and I didn't want to "welcome" them with anything negative.

That's not something we can honestly answer.
Only you can determine if it's within the limits of the gennys and the wiring.

I don't say that to be a smart a**.
We don't know what we don't know and we can't give you good information if we don't know.

Did I mention, we don't know?

I do know that a pair of Honda 2000s is louder than a 3500 gen.

I can verify that. A friend has a Honda 2000. I parked our truck side by side with a truck that has a Honda 3000 and the 3500 was quieter. I don’t know what kind of load he was pushing though.

Champion 3500W (3200 W) with remote start for $1K is my choice. I like the idea of being in my trailer and just clicking a button to get juice.

If you're dead-set on the HF gennies, nothing wrong with that. But, I'd buy once and buy big enough to run everything. Others love the 2x 2000W setup. It's not the path I'd go, though.
For the same price one can get "Dual Fuel" in the 3500W Champ inverter. The Dual Fuel runs twice as long on a 20# tank of LPG than it does on a tank of gasoline PLUS, no need to change jets when at high altitude. The LPG regulator handles all the changes necessary in fuel delivery.

I can live without remote start. I'd rather go look at what I'm starting before I do so. A bad habit I learned as a kid when flying with my dad. Always check fuel, oil, and all other essentials before even "turning the key". I do the same for all my vehicles as well as power equipment.

I think duel fuel is a cool option. Only drawback I can see is that you lose a little power.
I do like the piece of mind it provides as a backup if I did run out of gas.
A duel fuel genny just might fit my needs for an RV.
I have my eye on a Champion when the time comes.
If I had the money to sink into an onan I would semi permanently mount it and run straight LP.

I don't find the power loss to be a big deal for me. I sometimes camp up over 8,000 feet and when I do, it's often cool enough that the A/C is not even needed. When the generator/inverter is used for battery charging it's just loafing along on low speed. Some toast for breakfast, the microwave when preparing a meal, etc, are still within it's capabilities on LPG.
