The key difference in "drinking water" ratings vs "not rated" is in the soft plastics of the hose itself. Pliability comes in a number of ways. Many soft plastics use phthalates or other softeners that transfer to the food or water source...especially when heated. A hose in direct sun might be heated. These are endocrine disruptors and emit chemicals that mimic estrogen - xenoestrogens.

Some garden hoses also contain lead or other contaminants. If it comes from China, as almost all of this stuff does, there's a good bet that it contains lead.

Plastic fittings, on the other hand, tend to be made of PVC or ABS...harder rigid plastics that don't emit toxins. Plus the "exposure" from an adapter fitting is tiny in comparison to a 25' length of hose. More on plastic plumbing.

Soft, flexible plastics and pseudo-rubbers are notoriously bad...especially for little kids because lead is bad for a developing child and xenoestrogens literally alter their development - among other things, feminizing males.

Bear in mind that all of us older folk swam in this ****. From DDT and all other organo-chlorine pesticides, including lindane in kids' Kwell lice shampoo, to PCBs and many other chemicals, this stuff was as common and pervasive as asbestos and lead when we were younger.

But, as one of the other posters said, I've been drinking from the garden hose all my life. The key is that the "dose is the poison." Do it all the time and it matters. Do it rarely, and it doesn't....at least not usually.

P.S. I ran an environmental organization for years, and I testified before the EPA on the hazards of endocrine disruptors 20 years prior to the EPA finally taking action against them...especially in baby bottles, drinking water bottles, and so on.

I use the 90 degree fitting at the trailer with quick connect fittings.

Rubber hose seals need to replaced often. They are cheap, and easily changed. Plus 90 degree hose elbow connection and you will be good to go.

How long does it take for a hose NOT approved for drinking water to kill a person? I’m 71 and wondering how long I have left.

So, I purchased a simply short 3' hose, and leave IT always connected to the wetbay connector - I connect the OTHER end to the outside water hose instead. This short hose never has to be disconnected from the coach, meaning that it's less likely to leak from the constant connect/disconnect routine. I put it on tight, 'cause now I don't have to take it off.

The problem with that is the screen never gets cleaned . so one time you will hook up and have no water and wonder why . you'll have to pull your permanent hose and clean and or replace the screen

I'm wondering the same thing. Never seen a news story/article about someone getting sick from drinking from a hose. My thinking on all this nonsense is that Trump has a better chance of congress FULLY backing his border wall than a person getting sick from drinking water from a non approved hose.

Yep! I've used a 90 elbow since 2007 and have never had a leaky hose. Still have the hose we bought in 2007 and keep it as a spare and I keep a pack of washers on hand.

What about the taste?

I'm less worried about the toxicity than the taste. DW is fussy about the taste. Even with a USF-approved hose, she's had to learn to run and toss a bucket of water (to flush the hose) each time we return to the trailer after having been away for a week or two.

I'm thinking a non-USF hose might leave a stronger taste.

Water taste

I use the potable water hoses because they don't leave a taste. Of course I drank water from a garden hose when I was a kid. I didn't like the taste then either. Maybe the chemicals in a regular garden hose are bad for you, I don't know. It's all about the taste for me. I drink, cook, and wash the dishes with the RV water and it needs to taste good to me.

My water connection behind a plastic foot is tilted slightly so I use a 45 degree brass fitting. I also have quick connect fittings on both ends of hoses and switched to Apex Zero G 5/8” flex hose. I have 2 25’ hoses and they weigh practicly nothing and take little room to store. I also have one in a different color for cleanout.

I've been trying to stop the constant drip and leaks for years.
Sometimes I get lucky with only a small drip to where I can't get it to work.
When that happens I will fill my fresh water tank and use my onboard pump.
Besides, my city water connection is directly over my storage door on the left front side of the coach. You can tell that whoever decided to put it there, has never been Rving.

Hose leak

The brass male ends of most hoses can be fragile - their contact surface with the seal ring is very small. If the end is dinged a bit they will leak. I have solved this by cutting off the brass end and replacing it with plastic hose end repair type (got mine at Walmart). These tend to have a large, flat contact surface against the sealing ring plus they won't get bent. After this zero leaks from the male end.

I'm with everyone else who has this and extra washers.

I bought a swivel connector at Home Depot It will bend any direction to relive pressure on water inlet. It stays connected and the 1 1/2 inch extension gets it out so I can get my hand around it to tighten connections I am using a hose I bought in 1962 , have replaced the ends but hose has never leaked
