It’s Finally Time to Replace the CO/LP alarm

I’ve put it off and I’ve put it off, but I have finally given in to the incessant false alarms from my CO/LP sensor/alarm. I’ve been able to put up with the occasional false alarms for about a year now, but last night threw me over the edge.

It began at 3:00am. I would get out of bed, reset it, go back to sleep, only to be awoken every four minutes between then and 4:30am. Out to the truck I went in my underwear to retrieve a screwdriver and side cutter. Out she came.

I didn’t even bother to check the date on the label before I threw it in the trash.

I just placed an order for a replacement.

EDIT: for those concerned that I may have actually had a CO/LP problem, I didn’t. I confirmed that with my Fieldpiece multi meter.

I just replaced mine with just the LP detector and bought a combination smoke and CO2 detector for the ceiling......My Smoke only detector stopped working and needed to be replaced so I'm good for 10 years on the smoke and CO2 detector and 5 years on the LP detector all for about the same price as the LP and CO2 detector combination.

Did you find something to fit the same opening as your original unit or did you just cover that up? Not that it really matters now that I already ordered my replacement. I’m just interested.

SAFE T ALERT make an LP only detector that fits right in the opening it's about $25-$30 or so cheaper then the combination LP/CO2 detector.

Right one??

Not sure what model alarm you have, but just a "It happened to me".

My alarm also went off, and annoyingly when trying to setup camp, with NO evidence of a propane leak.

Could not get it to stay off. Kept hitting reset.
Finally, just took a side cutter and snipped the wires.

Problem solved!

Well, not really, my model also had a lead attached to my propane line which closed An in-line "safety" valve.

Sooo, no heater, no stove, no oven
NO propane l!

I had to reconnect wires ! 🥴

Anyway I went online to after another. The cheap ones, DO NOT have the lead which controls the inline propane switch .

Sooo, for a $140, I got the correct one and replaced the old one.

No problems since.

But without checking the "specific model" I had, I might have ordered the wrong one.

I also replaced my Safe-T-Alert LP/CO alarm that was giving false alarms with a Safe-T-Alert LP only alarm. I installed a Kidde CO alarm with a digital readout and 10 year battery. I haven't had a false alarm in 3 years.

I'm hoping that CO2 was a mistype. If not, PLEASE go out and buy a CO detector now! World of difference between CO and CO2.

OK, I give up, what model LP detector has the extra wire required?

Might be nice to let us all now so we can look at our model numbers and be prepared.

It looks like you could have simply hooked up the wire coming from that solenoid to the positive wire and that would have powered up the solenoid.

But you did not know that at the time.

Great info though TKS

They are only good for 5 years - Ours went off this year at 3 AM (must be their favorite time) - read the writing on the box, it says only good for 5 years. Another neighbor in the campground, theirs also went off, theirs was 5 years old. Just order a new one!!

Safe T Alert has a replacement kit that includes the solenoid. Unfortunately, the solenoid that came with mine had different sized fittings than the OEM one that FR installed at build time. Fortunately, the mobile mechanic that did the replacement had the necessary adapters on the truck.
