It was fun while it lasted

Well as they say, the best day of owning one is the day you get it and the day you sell it. Weren’t getting enough use out of it to justify the payments. Actually got a decent offer on trading in the toy hauler to a local car dealer and the equity I had in the diesel truck took the sting out of what I lost on the camper. So long “Bertha”, hello Air Bnb. Lol.

I hear what you are saying but its a real toss up - we sold our trailer a few years back because we thought the same as you - stay in a hotel or B&B, spending $100 - 200 per night but then we missed the campfire, fresh air in the woods, knowing who slept in our bed the night before, doing our campground meals, so we got back into a trailer 2 years ago and camped 18 nights last season, which is in the upper percentile for most people we know. Last summer we moved into a condo so we could lock the door and just leave anytime we want to - then it didn't make sense to have a truck sitting around taking up a parking spot, so about 2 months ago we dealt off both truck and trailer and brought home a Sunseeker 2650 CDWS and are going to try a new way of adventuring. Not necessarily gonna do huge road trips, although we can, we just know that we would miss our camping.

Will probably sell ours this year and down grade the diesel....still up in the air. Bought a cabin and acreage and are spending most of our time there.

I don't think my camping days are over either, already looking at smaller units. lol As is usually my case, I went a little too big when I bought my toy hauler. Living in the Buffalo area, it hurts paying a large payment for something that sits in a lot for 7 months a year.

It hurts being back in a 1500, but I picked up a new Silverado, and it's a beautiful ride. The dealer offered me 12,000 more for my diesel than I owed, for all those that say you won't get your money back out of a diesel, I highly disagree!!!

Depends how you get into it.

I think many foolishly sign up for way more than they need. Big diesel dually truck, 37' Indiana McMansion with 8 slides, 4 EZ up tents, and all the tech gear to produce ESPN broadcasts so that they don't miss a beat. Then reality hits after all the dotted lines are signed. Camping for them only happens 6 times a year, mostly local places, etc.

So what could have been accomplished with a nice used 23ft or 28ft camper and a family SUV instead cost a whole lot more right?

same boat

I have been considering the cost of the RV and truck as well. DW has some significant health issues which has been hindering our travels. We just camped last week for the first time since July 2018. If we cannot get out often, we will be forced to sell the camper and downgrade the truck.
I cannot justify, like others, paying the camper and truck cost, insurance etc if it is going to sit. Plus the depreciation of a rig that is another year older.
Health is not to be squandered. Get out there while you can, you never know when it will abruptly end.

WFCI, you're moving an 'Indiana McMansion' (love that!) around everytime you travel. You couldn't have possibly believed you can sustain that without VERY deep pockets...I'm just curious who steered you down that road. I frankly am amazed when I see younger families with these setups, and a little jealous maybe, after decades of tent camping. I don't have kids, so I spent all their college tuition on ME, lol. After I paid off house and retired, I decided to 'go RV'. Not cheap, but my choice was a fraction of the cost of some of the stuff y'all have!

Sorry to hear that RJD.
Today I turned 71 and have no intention of quitting. Last month I downsized from a 2017 43' 5er with 4 slides to a new 41' 5er with 5 slides. It does get used as we go to many places and spend 6 months or more in it.

We sold our MH a couple years back, bought a mobile home and lovin' it. Monthly fees for sewer, water, garbage collection, lawn maintenance and use of the facilities is $175/mo. We also have a salt water dock. Now, we fly, less than half the cost of driving and we are there in hours, not days. We camped for over 50 years, so it's time for a change.

It is interesting to note that the people that bought our MH contacted us. They have now sold the MH and looking for a mobile.

One thing about today’s people...they want everything NOW. I know a lot of people here are 60+...maybe most?

People don’t seem to want to start small and move up. Honestly do they start with a tent for 5 years and then a PU for a few etc. They go straight to an RV and learn from there. I am spoiled too, just raised poor.

Yes, I pass really young people in MH and I am like what?

We tent camped with our kids for a while. Then got busy with sports, 4H program, animals to show etc. I just turned 60 and hubby just turned 61. Bought our first TT, a 23 footer. I doubt we will move to a MH.

Sounds like a smart decision.

We didn't buy a tt til we retired and actually had time to travel. Working 6 days a week didn't leave much time to camp even though you can camp year round in our area.
