If you have a rig with the engine totally up front you and your co-pilot have some protection. The rest leave you hanging out there for impact. Ouch! Anyone ever notice that RV's don't come with a safety crash rating?

I looked into this in Texas some years ago now. It was only legal in a fifth wheel and there had to be two way communication possible. Only did this one time for a short ride so that my sons family and the wife and I could go to the beach.

Unfortunately it happens a lot these days! I used to drive bus for our college - usually doing about 70 - and I can't tell you the number of times I've had boats, TT's, car haulers, etc fly by me! I even had several doing it following a highway patrol car! Don't you think the CHP would have slowed and pulled the offender over? NOPE!

Be careful here! We watched Going RV also, and I believe they were in a 5th wheel, which, at least in CA, it's legal! It's NOT legal in a pull trailer!

Ambulances have to pass crash and rollover tests. They also have restraints for all crew and the patient (multi-point restraints in new models). https://youtu.be/I4Xkfvj_bxg

Motorhomes have seat belts on the seating designed for occupation during travel. I don't think any tt or 5th wheel made can claim the same.

Many years ago I saw the Luci and Desi movie, Long, Long Trailer. The vision of her trying to (I believe cook dinner) sticks with me. I would never ride in a TT or Fifth when traveling.

Because someone riding in the TT is somehow going to cause some catastrophic failure somewhere ? Kind of a stretch don't you think ?

Agree. My flight examiner once asked me if it was legal to fly without a radio! It is! But he followed up with "should you?". Point taken.

In Wisconsin it is legal with a 5r only and there has to be binary communication. That means that both people have to be able to talk at the same time and they can hear each other. Like a telephone, not a two way radio.

In some states it is legal in 5th Wheel trailers.
Travel trailers it is illegal in all 50 states.
More rules you may or may not be aware of:

Way back in High School I worked as the lot rat at an RV dealer here in town.
We had many customers and many rigs sold, I did the prep and delivery, now known as the PDI.
One of them had purchased a trailer and towed it along everywhere.
One day his buddy was driving and he was asleep in the trailer when there was an accident. Lived through it, but the trailer was trashed.
This was 1977 or 1978 here in Virginia.
I wouldn't have done it back then and even more so now.
