Kayak Rack
I built this for under $100!
Holds the two yaks and bikes and still have room for more.

Looks really nice! We carry our Kayaks with us when we camp also. I have a Yakima rack system, but it cost way more than what you spent... Great job.

KOOL, is that rack made of wood or steel? How do you keep it in the bed of the truck going down the road?

Plain old 2x4's. Kind of embarrassed to admit it. I had the tools to do it so why not and it was cheap (no other way to put it). I really didnt want to invest in something only to find out it wasn't what I wanted. I use ratchet straps over the lower part of the rack attached to the tie downs in the truck. I bought turnbuckles but decided that the rating might not be where I want it and the straps are rated for so much more. On our first trip now and it is working out perfectly. Oh ya, it's a really tight fit. I use millimeters for dimensioning projects and it is 2mm shorter than the truck bed. Only way out with the tailgate up is straight up.

Very nice job and cost effective too!! I considered the kind of rack that goes into the stake holes along the side of the bed as I have a cover over my bed. In the end, we decided to go with an inflatable kayak and avoided the entire thing. Anyway, great work.

Looks good!!
I am looking into buying 2 kayaks but was wondering how I would fit them into/onto the truck while towing.
What lengths are yours?
Your idea has inspired me

The blue one is 10' and the grey one is 12' 6". I let them hang out the back about 18". I will upload some more detailed pics today. I'm going to yak the river today I hope. It's going to be 34 celcius today!

the tie downs are situated such that they squeeze on the narrow part of the yak to hold it in place front to back
the bikes sit inside the rack with the fork mounts and the front tires just ride inside the bikes. I have them pushed to the outside of the rack to leave room for other stuff.
I load the yaks myself and set them on the rack then roll them into position.
Anything else you want to know, just ask.

I know. After spending all my money on kayaks I had a really hard time spending that much more on a rack. And then you have to buy the attachments. No doubt they are nice but....
Good luck on your build.

I can build fences, decks etc......but I am not going to even attempt this
I will just end up buying a rack like the other 99% of the, non-handy, population.

I'm very interested in the inflatable kayak. I've been reading about the sea eagle 370. What kind do you have and what do you think of it? I appreciate experience and comments you have.
Thanks!

Nicely done! 'Yaks are becoming so much more popular, that I'm sure that we will see more inovations for hauling them in the future. It was hauling 'yaks that kept us out of a 5'er the last time we purchased...

I have a hard tonneau, as well. That's why I went to a Thule roof system for our three 'yaks.

My yak is a 14' Wilderness tandem and I would rather not put the boat that far forward on the truck. I was hoping to find something to ride on the bumper to support the stern and rest the bow on top of the cab. Plus, I really didn't want to pay Thule's prices.
