Keys

Ok, I may be too much belt and suspenders here but I am curious to see what other people do with spare keys. On the door to the small storage area near the door I installed cup hooks to hold keys. What I have for spares is:
  • complete set of spare keys for TT
  • set of spare keys for TV
Then I have a magnetic keyholder mounted on one of the frame I beams.

My thought process is that if we are somewhere where the TV keys are lost, we could always get back to the TT, get in and have a set of TV keys.

Anyone else do this?

I keep one set of each (TV & TT) on me. Spare TV keys in the TT and spare TT keys in the TV.

In a pinch my DD (darling daughter) can climb through the rear hatch into the trailer and release the door lock. That reminds me I should give this a dry run sometime before we actually need it.

I keep my spare camper keys in the camper itself. I had a door key made for each key ring that I have (car, too, since I drive it to the storage lot fairly often). That means, I can theoretically always get into the camper as long as I don't lose my truck/car keys.

After driving 145 miles, one way, to my dealer and forgetting to leave my keys, I've kicked around hiding a door key under/outside of the camper somewhere. I have a spot in mind, just haven't done it yet.

I put my spare camper keys in the glove box of tv. Spare key for tv in magnetic key holder in my bumper of camper.

This way if I'm out sightseeing and lose my keys all I have to do is get back to the camper and I now have access to eveything again.

I lost my entire key ring at a boat ramp one time yep in the water 30' deep. Luckly the DW had a set of keys in her purse at the tent.

I installed one of these. RV Lock Keyless Remote for Trailers, 5th Wheel and Campers. I put the keypad in the propane tank compartment on my fiver where you can barely see it if you don't know its there and it is closed-in out of the weather. Of course I still keep spare keys in my TV so if the batteries die I can still get in.

Be aware that the key to your storage is more than likley the same key as everyone elses so I'm not sure if storing extra keys there is a good idea. Most manuafactuers have used the same key/lock on the storage bins for many years. We even have fireproof storage cabinets at work that use the same key!

This is why I personally had my storage locks rekeyed.

I'm using that in my favor on the off chance I lose the key to get in the door of my 5er. I have strategically placed a door key inside one of my compartments, and if it came down to it I can borrow a neighbor's key to open said compartment and retrieve my door key.

I hang a set in my water heater compartment. I do not have that locked. You are never going to stop a person who wants to steel something but If I get locked out or my wife we know where we have a set. They are just hanging on a tie rape, but you really need to look if you do not know where, and by that time I would hope that my neighbor would see someone strange and call someone. Campers got to look out for each other. Been doing this forever.

I learned a long time ago that locks only keep honest people honest and if someone wants in they will get in no matter what you do! With that being said I only lock the TT and TV when we are leaving them for extended periods of time. I have never had any problems camping as campers do watch out for one another.

The combo key box in the propane compartment is a brilliant idea.

We replaced our compartment keyed locks with the combination style locks. When I need to hide a set of keys (like when we go swimming) I put the spare keys in the compartment, spin the combination dial, and go have fun. Then I know that none of us has to keep up with a set of keys!
