Legal trailer length

I made an interesting discovery today - it seems that my 42' camper is over the legal allowable length in most states in the US.

https://www.goodsamcamping.com/plan/sizelimits.aspx

Has this ever been an issue for any of you folks? I still plan on using my camper as normal but just wonder what problems I might encounter. I'll just cross those bridges as I encounter them I guess.

I would think as long as you are legal in your home state, you should be ok in your travels. Also, unless you drive like a lunatic, noone is going to pull out the tape measure on you.

The only case I knew of is when an acquaintance of mine was traveling through Mississippi and got stopped for speeding. He had an older F350 full bed, crew cab and a 38' camper with a bike rack on the back. His overall length was over the state limit. since he was barely into the state, the officer gave him a choice of a ticket and call a tow company to tow his camper the rest of the way across or turn back and go around. He chose to turn back. He went across the state line ate a long lunch and then came right back through the same path without a problem.

To hear him tell the story, the officer was a jerk but all of us who know him can really imagine what went on. He probably copped an attitude towards being stopped and let the officer have it and you all know what happens when you don't give the officer his due respect, hear come the extra violations.

The acquaintance has said he will never set foot in Mississippi again but we all know that is a blessing for them not him.

Get yourself a CDL and commercial plates and you'll be legal too. Just dont forget to pull off at weigh stations.
