I hate it when we go to our normal campground and a camper is sticking into the roadway by a couple of feet because the owner understated the size. I talked to the staff about it and they said unfortunately it happens often. Someone ends up hitting them.

A few make it bad for everyone.

If I know the CG we're going to and how much of the TT I can hang off the back of the pad, I use the measurement from the back of the rear wheel to the front of the trailer. That takes about 10ft off the length of our 38ft trailer.

I have a 35 ft 5th wheel. We camp at a provincial campgropund a couple of hours away sometimes. The first time I booked a non hook up site I said 35 ft and got a site that we really like. The next time I went to book the same site, it wouldn't allow me to book that site because of my length. My son said to try up to 32 ft, which I did. I got the reservation. The site size has not changed at all. I booked the same site this past May up to 32 ft and was able to reserve it. No change in site at all. Confusing but we still fit in with all kinds of room to spare.

Perhaps the park that decides a length that is 8" more than the stated max length is not welcome at their park is a bit more "moronic" (whatever that is) than my comment, don't you think?
It appears several folks here agree with me as they seem to "customize" their lengths to fit in CG's that state the size of their unit WILL NOT FIT and is not welcome!

As someone whose camper changes lengths, I completely agree with you. Truck and camper need to be fully in our site. If not, we’ll park the truck somewhere else. It’s never happened that the camper didn’t fit, but I’d likely suck it up and move. I’d talk to the campground and change sites if I could, if I couldn’t, I’d move on down the road. It would suck, but my fault for fibbing.

I agree with Doug.

If I book a site by shrinking the size of our unit and we get there and it doesn't fit then that is MY fault. I too would move to another spot or go somewhere else.

To go ahead and just put your rig there with it sticking out in the traffic lanes is, as someone mentioned in an earlier post, 'moronic.'

Especially as I think Oaklevel’s normal campground is Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach. Sticking out into the campground road there is a major inconvenience and I truly believe when they say that it usually gets the camper hit.

I really think we'll fit ok. Granted we wouldn't have much spare room for the TV, and we may have to park the TV in the parking lot rather than the site. As you can see from the picture, there is little room left over on that site.

I certainly would never leave it sticking out, I try to be a considerate camper. :-)

I mean, really--I'm morally torn over an 8" discrepancy.

I recently shrunk my 5th wheel and was given a site that smaller than I cared for but we made do will not repeat that at Myrtle Beach Travel Park 4 foot difference makes a big difference at some parks.

If you can make a reservation from their website then go there and do not call back. Check the length of their site then you have the length of your rig.

Reminds me of the time I went fishing and when we went to tie up at the dock. Sign states, you pay per foot of length of boat. Pay at the marina.
Underneath there is a picture of a guy holding a chainsaw with the caption "And how long did you say your boat was?"

Trailer length

For many years, trailer length was simply hitch to rear bumper. In the past few years it seems that many measurements are of the box only. I continue to use hitch to bumper since that is physically what I'm towing and have to put into a camp or storage spot.

Your husband will learn which measurement to use the first time you use the shorter number, get to a campground, and can't fit in the reserved space.

When we had the TT I used to split the difference. Box was 29', tip to tail was 34'. Since a lot of sites used 32' as the cut off between site sizes, I would tell them it was 32' or 31', depending on the wording on the booking system.

Only had a problem once, and it wasn't even our fault. Sis-in-law was booking sites for all the families at one park. She didn't remember how big mine or her other brother in laws trailers were (his is the same size as ours) so she arbitrarily picked 26' as a number that was bigger than her 22' pop-up. We shoe horned them in, but vowed to never allow her to make the reservations in the future.

I kind of agree with this. Ours is 32’ from coupler to bumper. Many places like our provincial parks use 32’ as a dividing line for site sizes. If you are comfortable being a bit tight, use the box length or whatever you are comfortable with. If you want lots of room use the longer length.

I put 43 feet on a 32 ft site all the time in Ontario Provincial Parks. They don't know at the gate what size your trailer is. We have lists of sites that will work just fine.

I've found the Provincial parks tend to run big, probably to accommodate the TV. The biggest concern I've had with them for the few times we've used them in the past has been the turning radius of our TT. Now with the fiver, the turning radius is tighter, but we've introduced a new variable in 'height'. Got trips planned to Earl Rowe and Fairbanks this year (and one to Straits State Park in MI) where we're going to see how we do.

We stayed at MB Travel Park 3 owners ago in the 1970s. Stopped to preview it for friends coming to the area and wow~~~ the changes, not all good. Long ago a 30' TT was huge. Today 40' 5ers are stuffed in those sites. Now there are condos where the nature preserve was supposed to be protected forever.

My 5er is 41' 9" but when I make reservations it's 40'.
