Having had recent experience letting my Son take my camper. He let his Son take the camper also (easy come - easy go). When I got it back, there was extensive damage (sideswiped some trees apparently). Sway bar lost. Freeze damage to water system (busted hot water heater and leaking water pump and leaking toilet). I had to replace all. Had to call repair man to rebuild one rear corner (tree damage).

I was talking to a local RV store parts man about what happened. He told me he hears plenty stories like this. He said one should never loan an RV or a Boat to friends of even family.

Its hard to turn down family.
I made the mistake of loaning my truck to my son one time, he totaled it in a snow storm. From that point on I have never loaned anything out. I will though guide those who ask to where they can rent what ever it is they want to borrow. I work way to hard for the toys I have and don't want to have it damaged by anyone but me.

There's an idea to consider.
I would be concerned about damage or abuse not reported or seen and if damage occurred if it could ever be restored properly to it's original condition.

Do you know if gap insurance is included in renter paid amount? We owe more than our unit is worth

Thanks

One other thought...

For those who say "If it doesn't have a motor, then it is OK to loan out"...

Think about this:

When someone asks to borrow our towables, be it popup, travel trailer or 5th-wheeler, what makes you think that the person wanting to borrow has a vehicle capable of towing our towables?

Chances are they'll need to borrow our tow vehicle as well!

I took this photo as a joke of my car and 5'ver last summer to answer this very question:

For the first year I owned my TT, by brother rearranged his entire parking area to give me a place to park it until I could have my own driveway widened. He has earned the right to borrow it whenever he likes but he has yet to ask.

Depends.....

I've loaned ours to my daughter and long term boyfriend who has repaired both the trailer and REV.

They take very good care of the REV and it comes back in better condition than when they took it out. They pretty much have permanent custody of the trailer.

But unless someone has experience with rvs and you trust them to take care of it like it was their property, I'd say no.

Loaners

I once had a camper,
I once had some friends,
I loaned my camper to my friends,
Now I have no camper,
And I have no friends..

The answer would be no...I've had "loaned" items damaged or never returned. Same answer for tools, lawn mowers, etc.

Say "no" and don't feel like you have to explain or make an excuse.

After we purchase ours, my son made a comment that when he gets out of the Air Force he would have a place to live. Somehow after his comment our phone call got disconnected.

I'm retired military, including six years in the Marine Corps. And I'm retired LE. No comes very easy to me. My wife's irresponsible son and family are visiting for week very soon and I've already made it clear that my truck and new trailer will not be going anywhere with them.
