Low Overpass Crash

I wonder if a GPS played a role in the low overpass bus crash last night in Lakeview, NY? Supposedly the bus had picked up high school students at JFK Airport and was taking them back to Long Island. It occurred on the Southern State Parkway that didn’t allow for commercial traffic. Even though it was reported that the driver wasn’t from the area, a professional driver with the proper CDL license should know to stay off the Parkways in the New York area.

Here’s a couple of pictures of the bus. I wonder how fast he was going when the bus hit the overpass.

Dealing with the suposed professionals.. Believe me many are far from it. 90% I run into are using old and outdated car GPS or Google maps that accounts for no vehicle characteristics.

Had a truck hit one of our tunnels last week. First thing I asked him was do you know how tall your truck is? His responses I have no effing idea. 8 foot 6 tunnel 11 foot 8 truck...

Looks like he might have hit the lowest bridge on the NYS Parkway system. Apparently all commercial vehicles are banned from that system because of the number of low bridges on the parkway.

Three years ago, we were driving through NY city and about to cross the George Washington bridge when there was a (I think)18 wheeler that broke down on the bridge. It was gonna take hours to get the mess cleared and we let our GPS divert us to Henry Hudson Parkway. It said no trucks and we didn't know it was because of the overpass heights. Fortunately, we stayed in the right lane driving slow and saw one that was way less than the height of our MH and were able to get off the parkway and route ourselves through a neighborhood. What a nightmare! But lesson learned. Never again.

If I see a sign that says “no trucks” or “parkway” I just avoid it, especially on the East Coast.

This is what some of those overpasses look like on the Southern State Parkway. I could be wrong but I believe this is the actual overpass the bus hit. You can click on the picture to make it larger.

SEPA. All along this area of Chester County PA we have scores of covered bridges, low train bridges. This area was a hot bed for the railroading folks and the streets have been this way since back into the 1700's. With the railroads having the right of way we cannot move them and the roads are already dug into the ground to even get 8'6" on the tunnel. The center of our town is actually completely cut off from the other side by only this tunnel and one truck over pass which is where the trucks are SUPPOSED to go.

This is how some of the Garden State Parkway overpasses are like. You can run RVs on it just not the right lane. I run it twice a year, no problem.

I wonder if because its a parkway, more of a private restricted roadway, they do not NEED to post them... But I agree, still.

It’s posted on the on ramps to the parkways.

No trucks/ passenger cars only.

And that means no trailers, too.

It’s been like that since the first time I ever trucked out there, about 1990.
The difference between then and now is we didn’t have gps, internet/google maps or even cell phones. All we had was CB radios and full blown truck-stops that catered to drivers that could have a decent meal and conversation....especially about routes to take and everybody knew we weren’t allowed on parkways.
