LP alarm randomly going off...
hello!
yes, this would be most concerning...only if the propane was actually hooked up. There is no gas running in the camper and this alarm trips about once an hour...
i promise it is not a great situation when it goes off at 4:55 in the morning and wakes up the 1 and 4 year old. FML.
any idea on why this is happening?

Possibly expired. Most are 5-7 years.

Or just defective and needs replaced. Maybe the 4 year old has really bad gas in the middle of the night?

One morning while making breakfast my wife told me that our's was chirping. When I did some more looking, it was chirping because the batteries went dead, because our propane tank ran empty in the middle of the night and our fridge switched to DC.

It's likely either expired and will need to be replaced or your house batteries are low for some reason and it's chirping as a low voltage/battery alarm.
Check your 12v power with a meter and if you see 12 volts or higher it's probably the LP detector has passed it's "use by" date.

EOL = End of Life or defective. EOL usually chirps a certain number of times periodically letting you know. On the back of the detector it should tell you what each number of chirps mean.
Or, the dog farted.

If its a Safe-T-Alert Flush Mount RV Propane/LP Gas Alarm it will have two LED lights. One for LP and one for CO2. If the LED is green it is on. If the light flashes red-green it indicates low power. If it flashes red red green green it indicates EOL. Look close at the face plate it will have information to show what the alarm status is.

My 2015 model trailer (built in 2014) had the chirping problem show up in 2019. It was an EOL situation on the surface-mount LP alarm and I simply ordered an identical replacement from Amazon. Took about 10 minutes to swap them out.

Yes, ours just hit the five year mark(date is on the back). We were traveling so went by camping world and got a new one. It was easy to switch out. Look on you tube if you need a demonstration.

The dog fart is a real possibility. Our aging German Shepherd had a bout of diarrhea one night. The smell and the propane alarm woke us up simultaneously. UGH.

Alarm
Old or low battery. I usually get a maximum of 3 years.

Can you post a picture of it? Someone will be sure to have one like it and be able to help with even an owners manual for it.

Lots of good advice but don't overlook the possibility of another 'gas' setting it off.
Over the years we have found dog farts, cat litter, PAM cooking spray, scented air fresheners, hair spray and a few others that would set them off. I realize you said 4:55 AM but who knows? Just sayin'...

Mine went bad after just 2yrs. I called the mfg they sent me a new one.( no cost) I took mine off the wall and pulled the fuse after the 3rd time it went off. We carry 2 portable co2/lp detectors, so no problem on safety.
