Mathers Campground or Sedona?

Hi folks, I need your advice. I have limited time off in September to take my niece camping. Which campground would you rather spend more time, Mathers at the Grand Canyon, or a campground in Sedona?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

We really like the Sedona area. We stay at Rancho Sedona RV park.

I recommend Sedona

Rancho Sedona is very nice, and the town and area have lots of things to do, look at, and spend money on. Sedona golf Resort is a beautiful course.

Sedona has a greater variety of things to do. If your trip is long enough, take a day to ride the train from Sedona to Grand Canyon. Your profile doesn't say what camper you have, but if Class A or C, be careful trying to get around Sedona. Downtown can be busy and tight. If you have a toad, then you should be fine. It's also navigable with a truck, but parking is tight if you have a dually!

Parking was impossible with our Tundra pickup. That's one busy tourist trap, but it was beautiful.

We always stay at the Grand Canyon Railroad RV park in Williams. Then take day trips to everywhere else (Sedona, Jerome, Flagstaff, Prescott, Grand Canyon, etc).

Williams has a lot of great places to eat with evening entertainment. Plus it is much quieter than the other tourist destinations.

Since you have a jeep, you should be able to do a lot of out-of-town site seeing on the four-wheeler trails around Sedona. That was really fun when we were there.

Do a search on 'Sedona az Jeep trails'. Lots of good info on the different levels of trails. Also, the info center in Sedona is a great source. If I remember right, there are also guide companies that guide while you follow in your Jeep.

Lots of trails that even a 4x4 pickup won't have any trouble with.

sedona

hi Bill,

I live 15 mi from Sedona. if you jeep, check out Snebley hill rd, and Broken arrow ( a short trail just out side Sedona- arguably the best jeep trail in AZ if not the swest. ) High clearance needed on both.

there is a train ride in Clarkdale up the verde river canyon that is very scenic.

all the hikes in the Sedona area are spectacular.

Has she ever been to the Grand Canyon? If not I would say Mather.

Well, if you've never been to the Grand Canyon that you absolutely must go there. Whether you stay there or can get there from Sedona doesn't matter. I've been to the Canyon twice but have not camped there but we did camp in (well, near) Sedona this spring staying at Distant Drums RV Resort. We had a nice quiet spot and the facilities were clean and well kept but not sure I'd call it a resort. It is a few miles outside of the village though. While we were there we took a jeep tour with Arizona Safari (not the ubiquitous pink jeeps), visited Toozigoot and Montezuma's Castle National monuments. If you have time, a tour of the slot canyons in Page is well worth it. We went with the less crowded tour of Canyon-X and had were just amazed.

If you are willing to hike into the canyon then go to the Grand Canyon. Mather is not a really nice campground and you cannot see the canyon from the campground. But for hikers the grand canyon is amazing.
If you are more of a sightseer go to Sedona. We like dead horse ranch state park in cottonwood. Has hook ups and nice showers close to Sedona without crowds. You can walk in to old town cottonwood which has great restaurants.

There is no train from Sedona to Grand Canyon. The train is in Williams, AZ.

We agree. Grand Canyon Railway RV Park is one of the best.
We like it because it is first rate. In the heart of town. And convenient to everything.
Williams is a nice town and has everything.
Enjoy.
