Missouri Flooding
SITREP:
At my work, the plant (Pacific, MO) is isolated and abandoned. The road its on (the famed Route 66) is flooded on either side. The plant sits up on a slight hill. Last check, the plant was still mostly dry. Couple of conveyor pits are probably flooded, but that happens from time to time. Power is still on, as the voicemail/automated attendant still picks up. We had 15 minutes notice before police shut down the road. Took us 30 to scram the plant. I had to drive (with police escort) thru about 300 feet of foot deep water just to get out. Its probably 6 foot deep there now. You can see the silos from my plant in the distance. This is the road I had to go out on:
My new plant that I will be joining in a couple of weeks is right at the confluence of the River Des Peres and the Mississippi in the Carondolet neighborhood at the southern edge of STL. I've not gotten any word on its status yet.
Jefferson County where I live (just south of STL) is isolated from St. Louis. Travel into our out of STL County is impossible. You cannot cross the Meramec River anywhere. I-55 and I-44 are shut down in all directions. The attached map shows my home at the red star, all round icons are closed roads. I'm in no danger from flood waters at my house, but some friends have had to evacuate. Heading southbound out of Jefferson County is no problem.
Current predictions are for a crest around midnight tomorrow (Happy New Year) with maybe 2-3 days till back under flood stage. As far as magnitude, this one beats the all time flood of '93 for record heights along the Meramec River. The Mississippi could reach near record levels in STL and south down to Memphis. '93s flood stayed around much longer. Water was up for weeks. This one should be gone in a few days. But with that comes strong currents. Water over State Route 109 looks like a rapid. 109 will probably be a total loss after this is over and will need months to be rebuilt.
So far Missouri has registered 14 fatalities. Mostly due to cars being swept away by rushing water. In my life of living in the STL, I have never seen a December flood like this.

Tim- when it rains it pours. Seems south of the city is taking the brunt. I can see water off my porch but it's a non issue. Our lakes here did rise and we had water in about 12 houses in the neighborhood. That was early on Saturday. No one imagined what would transpire down your way. My storage lot for the RV is protected by a levee and they were kind enough to let us know to come get our stuff. Stay safe.

We live in Union...we made the news before anybody in STL County or Jefferson County. Bourbese River has gone way down, and most of those businesses that the national news showed with water in them (McDonald's, Dickey Bub Farm & Home, Quick Trip and Jack-in-the-Box) are out of the flood waters now, but have a heck of a clean-up facing them. In all of my years in Missouri, I've never seen one this bad in the winter. The '93 flood was caused by water coming down the Mississippi and Missouri from far up-stream. This one was a torrential rain over a short period. We had between 10 and 10.5 inches at our house in 3 days.
We live right in the center of town, at one of the highest points, so we were out of the flooding, but that McDonald's is only aboutt 4 blocks from us.
Stay safe, Cowracer and ryand...and everybody else around here.

I was in a flood like this back in 1973 in Oklahoma the hole town of 40,000 people under water. Very bad deal I was a lot younger back then. I feel for you and hope all turns out for the best for all folks and there families.
I've never lived in a low area since those days. And I'm still living on a hill today. I've been stranded here from flood waters but the waters and road and bridges washed away but it never came close to getting into my house. That 1973 flood has stuck in my mind since that flood. Sad part of life and my prayer are with you all.
