I understand the cost aspect. And I understand the "start and park" teams. But I dont believe the 5 minute clock policy or the garage policy is related to money. It was instituted for the purpose of preventing drivers from fixing their car with tape and then leaving a debris field behind them. Or getting into another wreck driving a compromised car from the first wreck. Which becomes a safety concern

I totally get the old start and park guys - start 4 or 5 races and then have enough money to run a full race - hopefully - the problem was that most of those guys didn't have enough backing to have good enough equipment to actually "compete".

There was a local guy in WNY that ran every Saturday night in a beat-to-snot Pinto. He always almost always finished 2nd or 3rd from last (the guys who finished behind him wrecked out). He'd buy everyone's used tires and run them until they were on the cords. He didn't care about winning at all - he just loved racing, it was his hobby.

As far as the 5 minute damage rule, I have to say I'm on the fence. I understand safety issues, but seeing a car with no hood or fenders running around Bristol or Martinsville was always fun.

I wholeheartedly agree with the pre-PC sentiment - I always looked forward to an interview with Jimmy Spencer, especially if someone wrecked him.

Ahhhh, the good old days.

iRacing/eRacing is OK, as long as you don't take it too seriously. I can't consider it racing, but it is entertainment. I wonder if they could set up a figure 8 track, or maybe even better, a demolition derby?

Depends on the track. Out west they are still sold out on cup day, or close to it. We usually go to Texas, Phoenix, Vegas, and occasionally Fontana. And the track camping is FULL.

LOL - Maybe in Oregon or Washington …

For the 2020 fall race at PIR you'd be very hard pressed to get a camping spot or ticket for Sunday's race. The lady I talked to said they were looking at creating another new camping area, but I would imagine that's probably already sold out too.

In Phoenix you're "grandfathered" in for your seats and camping spots. I think we had to renew our tickets and space for the fall race BEFORE they even ran the spring race. When they open up sales to the general public after the grandfather renewal time everything sells almost instantly.

We called to add a ticket on the morning everything went on sale to the public it took two and a half hours to get through and by then there wasn't anything available.

I didn't start listening/watching until 1978 - anything before that was just a news reel feature. The small Winston West tracks weren't broadcast on anything to my knowledge.

At least NASCAR isn't as staged as the WWF (or other pro Wrestling).

What's happened with NASCAR is the tinkering they've done to make the cars safe that's taken away much of the excitement that made the sport popular in it's beginning.

There's nothing like a big wreck at Daytona or Talladega to bring fans in the stands up out of their seats and those at home to actually wake up.

I used to enjoy NASCAR when the winner's car didn't have a straight body panel on it anywhere and lots of rubber "donuts" burned on the side panels.

That meant they'd been RACING.

Oh yeah, the fist fights weren't phony like in Wrestling.

The run what you brung racing still exists at small dirt oval tracks around the country.

It actually started with a bunch of redneck moonshiners.
Red Byron was one and he won the first race at Daytona when they started racing on the sand. Car was a modified 39 Ford.

Most moonshiners in my family identified more with hillbilly. One set of grandparents were from northern Arkansas and the other from Alabama. My Grandpas always said I came from a long line of proud redneck hillbillys
