new, don't laugh

just checking over a few items before next weekend when we camp for the first time.
Are hot water heaters self igniting or do you light it each trip? and what else might you recommend to a newbie besides from the pulling issue were new as new gets. we will be going with some friends, so we have a resource, but we don't want to look totally goofy!

You won't look goofy unless you don't ask the questions you have, so please ask away. First, is your water heater a combination electric and gas(DSI), or gas only? Either way, you will have to light it each trip once you arrive at your destination. Do not light it before leaving home. Ask other questions as you need to and we will be happy to assist you.

The only goofy questions are the ones left unasked!!

You shouldn't roll down the road with the heater lit. It won't stay lit as it's not designed (in most campers) to do so. How you light the unit will depend on your make/model. Some will require you to manually light, which is pretty much the same as lighting the hot water heater in the house. Others will have a nice little switch that will do all of the work for you and should be clearly marked somewhere in the camper.

A word of advice - as I wasn't aware of this during my first trip - make sure the water heater bypass valves are in the correct position, otherwise you'll have no hot water and possible pressure issues!

Best of luck to you, and have fun!!

Waitin' for the weekend!
