I have an older Rockwood that came with a not very comfortable mattress. I added a foam topper that cost about $100. At first it felt odd because it conforms to the body. Now I sleep better on it than at home.

We use a full size 3 inch topper on an Rv queen. About in inch or two narrow on the sides. Came from bed bath and beyond I think. We are not large people so it works fine.

I fully expected to replace my RV mattress when I bought the TT. It took one or two nights, but strangely I don't mind it after sleeping on it every night for 3 weeks. I'll still likely upgrade it to something better (like Zinus or Lucid), but I've moved that way down on my list of priorities.

Mattress topper
We are in our 60s as well. We got a 2 inch memory foam mattress topper and it is heaven.

Mattress decision
My wife and I are also in our 60's and when we bought our Sunseeker we measured the mattress, it was a short queen. We also measured the space at the foot end of the mattress and had just enough room for a full queen mattress, which is what we hoped. So, when we moved out of the condo into the motorhome for full time living we took our Sleep Number mattress and got rid of the short queen. It does make it a little interesting getting in and out of bed when we have to climb in from the foot rather than getting in on the side, but to have the same mattress we have had for 15 years it makes it all worth it. We had this plan in mind as we were looking for the motorhome, so it may not be perfect but it is so much nicer than any RV mattress we tried.

The wife and I, in our 60's also, added one of these to the stock matress:

We find it very comfortable.

Replaced mattress and topper both
Like most others we replaced the mattress as well as used a topper. Get a good quality. There are some things that you can skimp on. What you sleep on isn't one of them.
Ours is a King size but I think we might downsize to a Queen.

Camper Mattress
Go with Sleep Number. We have tried all the foam tricks and nothing comes close to adjustability and comfort of our Sleep Number mattress.

Easy answer
Get a piece of 4 inch memory foam the size of the mattress. Works great.

The mattresses in the units are all...for the most part...crap. I wouldn't waste my money with a topper. Take the plunge and get a good mattress ...especially if you are going to spend a lot of nights in the RV. We bought one from Sears...when they were still around in Canada... and have never regretted it,

All the YouTubers talk about Brooklyn Bedding of course they are getting sponsored. We use a topper and we’ve been fine so far.

Hi Don, We bought an FSX Salem last year and really appreciate your question. Our camper has a Murphy bed so simply buying a mattress seems impossible and we would welcome advice on that as well. For our double bunk beds, we replaced the bottom one with a 4” topper (Yiwa brand from Walmart ) that only needed the angle cut to fit. Thanks to a previous post, I did use an electric knife which worked perfect! We doubled the top with both originals for now…”it’s camping” ☺️ congrats and happy trails to ya🎶🌈✨

You've gotten lots of suggestions. Our friends have a Sleep Number at home and bought a Sleep Number for their camper.
If you can get one similar to your home mattress, that will give you the best sleep on the road.
Welcome to the forum!

We bought a custom made mattress
Yes, the stock mattresses from the trailer manufacturer are worthless. In our Wolf Pup we tried toppers and underlain foam pads. Eventually, we ordered a 6" custom sized foam mattress from Original Mattress Factory, which is local to the upper midwest. We couldn't be happier with it.

We used this 8" foam mattress to replace a Murphy bed mattress, and it works great. I thought I'd have to cut/score the back side so that it would fold, but I did not. It's flexible enough to fold up without cutting.
It's not too heavy to lift the Murphy bed. It's 6" of high-density foam (i.e. lightweight foam rubber) and 2" of memory foam on top, so not nearly as heavy as a solid memory foam slab. It's slightly heavier than the factory mattress, but not by much.

In my camper I replaced the mattress with a Zinus memory foam mattress. I also have one in our house.

Next thing the mattress was a foot thick. Lol.
My suggestion (which I ended up doing after a couple of months) is don’t even try to add a topper, and just spring for a new and better mattress to start off with. I got lucky when I bought ours, we got a Zinus Spa Sensations Serenity memory foam mattress for $150 off at Walmart, and it’s been the best thing we did.

This is what we did too. In fact, we liked the new mattress so much we purchased another one just like it for home. A good nights sleep is your best friend no matter what you are doing. We donated our "new, never used, RV mattress to the local woman's shelter.

RV Bed Blues
Our 2014 Wolf Pup came new with a foam short queen mattress. It was close to the the worst mattress I ever tried to sleep on. It didn't breathe at all, so my bottom side got hot and sweaty even when cold on top. My butt sagged through to the board beneath causing me to sleep face up jack knifed. Plus, it was over 4" too short for the space, so my feet hung over the end.
I carefully measured the area available for a mattress and concluded that a full queen would just fit. I went around to local mattress stores and had them place mattresses on the floor and laid on them. I found one that suited me very well, so I bought it.
Getting that mattress in my Wolf Pup was like a middle weight wrestling a Sumo. I had to virtually fold it in half, which it decidedly did not like, to get it through the door and in place, but i managed.
I gave the original short queen back to the dealer where I bought the trailer.
This was about 9 years ago, when I was 64 years old. Today, I could not win that battle, so I would have to hire a "buck" to get that mattress in. But, it would be worth it! I sleep so much better on that mattress than on the original.
My $.02: Memory foam and any other type toppers aren't worth the bother. Find a good, conventional (spring core) design mattress that you like and, somehow, get it into your trailer. It will make the RV experience vastly better!

Get a new mattress
After one trip, we knew we would need a new mattress. We found a local mattress place that had memory foam mattresses that they made in both full size queen and RV queen size. Ours was an RV size do we stuck with that. We are both short so we ended up with a 7inch memory foam. They had thicker ones but the bed is pretty high to start with, lol. I think we paid just under $300 and it’s amazing, just like sleeping in our memory foam mattress at home.
