In Iraq, we had a mission go longer than expected and we had to 'camp' out in the desert with no tents, cots, etc. Just sleeping in the sand in full battle rattle (helmet, body army, fatigues). A buddy next to me woke us up screaming about a scorpion in his his helmet. We never found it, so who knows if it was actually there. Either way, it was tough getting back to sleep.

ChuckS I too remember sleeping on the back deck of our tanks. Pull a tarp over and stay warm all night long in the wilds of Gagetown, in the winter. The mattress wasn't all that soft but it worked, lol. Back in the 60s

I follow a Canadian guy on YouTube named Steve Wallis aka “Camping with Steve” (Step 2) who does what he calls “stealth camping”. That could be anything from sleeping under the stars in a hammock to sleeping in a rental van. All of it free camping but sometimes with power in the form of a generator or a lithium power pack. All good fun and definitely not “glamping”.

Imagine if we applied these same standards to other things:

I'm sorry Mr Athlete who gets paid millions of dollars a year to play in front of thousands of fans everyday, what you're doing is not really playing baseball. It's too glamorous with all your fancy fields and equipment and training methods.

No... "real" baseball is 9 guys in the middle of a rocky dirt field in ripped jeans and duct tape-covered shoes with old pillows as the bases.

OR

I'm sorry mr businessman who works 40 hours in an office and types on a computer all day making a decent salary. You're not working a real job. That's way too glamorous.

A "real" job requires you to stand on your feet outside all day in extreme temperatures doing back-breaking work while you are covered in dust, grime and sweat for 60 hours a week.

That's what I would define as "glamorous".

That is Taj Mahal compared to my 100 sq ft. BEYOND glamorous. And to have AC while 'camping' is the height of glamping!

Camping = A tent in the wilderness.
Glamping = An RV with all the comforts of home.
Camping = An RV in the woods, field, beach or wilderness, with or without hookups, that you are mostly outside under shade trees or awning grilling out meals.

Glamping = An RV at a KOA or resort with a swimming pool, cable TV and a game house, a stone's throw from a restaurant you eat at and a WalMart.

Agree with your friend but sometimes you've got to swallow your pride and go to KOA. ha. I'm not beneath spending the night in Walmart lot or Casino's when just trying to get somewhere.

I 100% agree with your statement!

When did everyone become so wrapped up in what others think of what they're doing? At least someone is actually doing something with their life. Just like mine - Opinions are like butt holes and most stink!

I'd like to think this post was just a friendly conversation among buddies but It's called envy and they are jealous of what you have. To make themselves feel better about them they have to bring others down. We've allowed the "haters" a seat at the table for to long. I for one have never let them define who or what I do.

As Jack Nicholson' s character Col. Jessup said on the stand in "A Few Good Men" - If you've unhappy with the blanket of freedom I provide; then pick up a weapon and man a post!!

And just so we're clear - I don't care what you think of me or what I do!

I think it's amusing as hell that you guys read anything deeper into this than what it is! Subliminal guilt? Knowing you're not really camping with 3 TV's tugging at the ol' macho heart strings? Once you have an RV, you're never camping like dear old John Wayne ever again! Unless you watched the John Wayne movie I never saw...you know, the one where he sleeps on a heated mattress, or has air conditioning, heats his beans in a microwave, then washes his mess kit with hot water from a faucet, then washes everything down with a cold beer from his fridge, before watching a DVD of True Grit.

Nope. No guilt at all.

Camping is camping. Doesn't matter how or even where you do it.

That's the "revisionist" definition, not the "real" definition.

I thought I was roughing it when I didn't have internet, Dish TV, and AC. Now I found a lakefront lot with everything for the summer. That's Glamping!!!

Some cover guilt; some cover envy. But I'm going with Draggo. You call your trips what you wish.

One night at Lake Powell, we decided to just sleep on the beach with no tent. My son made the mistake of looking for scorpions with a blacklight just after dark. He and my grandson found about 8 within 30 feet of our beach. My grandson woke up dreaming & screaming that he'd been stung by a scorpion. Of course he hadn't been. My son told him that the scorpions wouldn't come out on the beach while the moon was up. Fortunately, my grandson fell asleep before the moon went down.

When I was young, my buddy got up and put his pants on without shaking them out first. Luckily, he was stung on his left knee, and not his wee knee.

We had a neighbor kid with us once who thought there were sharks in fresh water. Before they went to go sleep in the boat, I shook out his sleeping bag, and out plopped a scorpion. We didn't mention it to him.

I'm leaving Friday for a backpacking trip in CO. I use a 3 sided tarp tent. I still prefer that over my ROO, but at least a hybrid has the feel of a tent, and my wife will go with me if I take it.

My main reason for stepping up to an RV. She no longer thought it was acceptable to sleep on the ground or squat in the bushes. And frankly, it was getting old for me too. BTW, loved the scorpion stories!

Glamping is not a real word. It is a marketing ploy.
