No Trucks Ticket in PA

I am in PA visiting my Father on the way to the Hospital from the hotel this morning I was pulled over and given a ticket for going down a road that is posted "NO TRUCKS" I drive a F250 single rear wheel. This is bull he told me that that sign means over 5,000 lb and my truck is over that.
This is 🐂💩........

What town? What road? What kind of road? It sounds like some local ordinance because the signs typically have the weight limits posted.

You may have a good chance of beating that one but it sounds like some revenue generating local thing. I've driven in PA about 30 years in pickups over 5000lbs and have never had that happen nor heard of it happening to someone else.

That sucks and the 'officer' must have been looking for anything he could write tickets on.
Quick question... do you have any signage on the side of your truck?
Sometimes they try to justify trucks with business signs as 'commercial' even though they are simply daily drivers.

So does this cop ticket the ambulances that drive the area as well?

Fire and rescue?

Garbage truck, UPS, FEDEX, food delivery trucks?

I'd go out of my way to fight it just to watch the cop eat it.

Sort of sounds like 51 through Perry, or 201 through Belle Vernon and Fayette City, or Summerville WV on 19. I hope the OP posts up the town.

I don't remember 51 thru Perryopolis being that way and that was the major thorough fare to get down to 40 in Uniontown, 201 thru Fayette City I can undertand cause it got tight in some spots but it has been 13 years since we moved from Belle Vernon or actually Rostraver Township. But West Newton did have several local roads like that. With that said, sounds like we have traveled many of the same local roads in SW PA.

Your ticket should have a code/law number that you supposedly violated on it. You might be able to internet research this applicable code/law to verify or refute what the officer wrote you up for....depending on how general or specific it is.

I always thought that meant no COMMERCIAL trucks. At weigh stations when it says all trucks it doesn't mean private pickups. It should be posted with a load limit sign that says no vehicles over 5K. I agree. Pure B.S.

How is the truck registered? Here in CT if you have combination plates then it is not considered a truck. Only commercial or truck plates however as someone mentioned they can nail you if you have signage or they deem the truck is being used for commercial purposes.

I have heard that the police sometimes ticket HD trucks here on the parkway even though they are not technically supposed to. The signs say 7500lb weight restriction and they cite GVWR even though the trucks themselves are under weight. If you go to court they immediately throw it out. Still a PITA though. Probably figured you weren't going to come back for court so they had an easy target.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Another reason to stay out of PA.

no trucks

No need to stay out of the whole state because of a local fund raising administration. Like Brooksville Florida and its money grabbing traffic cameras. I still enjoy going to Florida but will never go back to Brooksville.

Is it a bylaw or state highway act that results in demerit points? If it's bylaw, I would ignore it as this appears to be a county revenue grab.

That was my first thought, too. Easy pickin's. They figure you won't be hanging around, so you aren't going to go to court to fight it.

Had a similar issue back in the 70's. I-70 through West Virginia is only about 10 miles long, so 90% of the vehicles are out of state (especially at 3am). Speed limit suddenly went from 60mph to 50mph. Saw a cop, but too late. He pulled out, pulled up behind the guy behind me (WV plates), pulled around him, pulled up behind me (out of state plates) and blue-lighted me. As soon as I KNEW I was getting a ticket anyway, I told him he's got quite a racket going here. That didn't make him happy, but I was already getting the ticket! And of course, I was just passing through, so I certainly wasn't going to hang around to fight it.

Emergency equipment are exempt from local laws like that.

There are many questions. #1 was the road posted no trucks over 5ooo lbs.#2 was this the only route to get where you we're going. #3 is your truck a personal vehicle or commercial vehicle. It sounds as if this was a local cop trying to make his bones. If it was me I would request a court hearing. Most any judge would throw this out for sure. #4 did the cop have your truck weight checked on certified scales. I know that it's inconvenient too travel to a hearing but it could come with points and insurance problems.
