Just curious, we just purchased a 2016 2109s mini lite that has nitrogen filled tires. Is this suppose to help prevent blowouts?

We were just starting a 3 month trip to the east coast this past Sunday and had gotten as far as Winnemucca, NV, when our first tire blew and damaged the passenger side of the fifth wheel. After putting on the spare we decided to return home for repairs. Had gone about 120 miles towards home when the second tire on the same side blew. We, too, had to wait over four hours in the heat of the Nevada desert for a replacement tire. We didn't have quite as much damage as "dnwiginton", but it was bad enough.

Taking the rig in this Friday for repairs to begin and will definitely replace all of the tires with LT tires (probably Goodyear G614's)

I'm guessing that trailer weight is actually the axle weight on the trailer, and not the total weight. Dry weight on a bone stock 2012 365saq is 11,800. I don't remember from the pictures, but were both blowouts on the same axle? You may want to check for a bent axle or springs.

You said the magic word, Marathon. Replaced a set of 4 two year olds under my Montana when I discovered both wear and bubbles. Replaced them with Michelin XPS Rib. That was about 4 years and 40,000 miles ago. Michelins are doing fine. No significant wear and certainly no bubbles. They cost, but I've never been left beside the road on Michelins.
For what it is worth, in a former life, had a 1998 Cardinal with 3 axles. Had heard about such problems, so carried 2 spares. Blew 3 tires between Jackson MS and Tampa FL. I, fortunately, could limp in on 5 tires and one rim. Replaced all 6. Think they were Generals, but not sure.
I think, regardless of the brand used by the RV manufacturer, they are buying the cheapest available tires and the tire manufacturer is shipping the old stock they couldn't sell.

Marathons used to be made in the US then they sent production to China then brought it back for a year or so then sent it back to China so it is possible that you got China Bombs on your 5th wheel.......I put G614's on our 5th wheel prior to taking a trip to Alaska last Summer. They did not even loose air. I was anticipating having blowouts on the Alaska Hwy so I bought and extra spare and another spare tire carrier for the rv. Did not have a problem with 5th wheel but one day while visiting Medora ND we had a flat on the truck while shopping in town....The truck had LT tires so just having LT tires will not prevent a flat....

Any of you try these Flat Stoppers?

I am thinking of trying these Flat Stoppers to park the trailer on when it is home. They aren't cheap, but maybe they will help with the flat spotting/belt separation that seems to be plaguing us. My Salem is in the shop now for wheel well repair, my brother just ripped off the side of his trailer when he had 2 blowouts at the same time.

So after reading all these forums about blowouts and the damage they do to the slides and shell, why don't the manufacturers build something around the tires/wheelwell areas that will restrict the damage to the blown tires alone? Seems like common sense to me - oh wait, maybe that is my answer!!

Glade to hear all ok. What were the road conditions? How old where the tires. What rating where they? Run Nitro? Air temp? How often do you stop at Rest areas and check tires? lots of factors figure in when driving. Yep and Trailer weight.

I had two blow outs several years ago on my new tt. Yes they where the original tires furnished by FR, Nitro filled. Bad road conditions set off the first one along with 96 degree air temp. (not good) 2nd was the next day same tem. I had tt serviced for wheel repack and they over filled the tires which cause the 2nd failure. I returned home and changed all tires to Good year Marathon tire. I even transferred them to my new tt this year and told the dealer to keep the crapie ties that come with these TT. Ties where only a year old and not many miles. I also check tires every rest stop I make.

Just don't drive and never check your equip. May save you some grief down the road. Later RJD

it looks like the op drove for a bit with the flat and that why it came apart so much

bad tires

In 2003 I bought a new Tahoe travel trailer in Texas, I left for Yellowstone Park, I blew every tire on it before I got to Yellowstone, sometimes two in one day it had Carlisle tires on it, I was not overloaded & I checked tire pressure every day. I ended up putting a set of cooper tires on it in Cody Wy. never had any more problems. The dealer stated when I got back to Texas, that I should have saved old blown tires, and they would have replaced them. I told him when you go on vacation you don't want to haul a pickup load of tires back. At that time everyone you talked to had the same problem with Carlisle tires.

Blowouts

Wow this sounds so familiar! We left texas on the 27th heading for Indiana and the FROG rally. Day one- blew tire that tore out hydraulic hoses and cracked the wheel cowling. Bought a new different brand tire in next town $140. Proceeded on trip second day - boom! Another blowout. Same side. Got really worried because our tires came on our 2014 Cardinal are not worn or old and we are not overloaded. Bought new tires in Longview. Tired so spent night by lake outside of town. Woke up next morning to flat $140 replacement tire. Ugh. Was caused by road hazard and not repairable. Threw 2 day old tire in trash blow outs were Goodyear Marathon 235/80R/16 E rated. I am calling Goodyear back. They allowed $58 adjustment on one tire. If you take it off the rim they won't honor adjustment. For days we traveled with no way to put slides out or get trailer off truck.

You don't need to drive with a flat to have the tires explode! When my tires came apart I had some friends following me in another fifth wheel and they would have definitely said something to me if any of my tires even looked flat.

If you check other forums you'll find that Marathon tires have been problems on larger rigs. Forest River was aware of the problem and for a period of time were putting Goodyear G614's on the larger fifth wheels, then suddenly stopped and left them as dealer options. (Of course, the dealers weren't going to expend the money to put them on, nor would they even offer the option.)

I had three Goodyear Marathons blowout/separate in the same day. The tires were two years old and pressure was correct. The outside temp was around 93.

You've convinced me to spend the money on a TPMS.
