Don't flat tow in 4-low!

https://www.thedrive.com/news/39794/...ng-it-in-4-low

I'm pretty sure it grenaded well before it hit the theoretical 50,000 rpm. But still, the carnage is impressive!

Wow.

At least I don't feel about my recent dumb-sxxx now, towing 50 miles with the e-brake on.

I did do the out of gear check before hooking up, just never got back inside to release the brake. And the Ram 5500 just pulls like a husky, so it never even notices.

Off to the auto shop now to get the brakes repaired.

At $30K just for parts, I can only imagine what the labor will be. Stick a fork in it, because that Wrangler is done. Very costly mistake. Depending on the insurance company there may be another shoe to drop!

Total loss, goes to an insurance auction now. That is repairable by buying a crashed or rolled Jeep and swapping the mechanicals over.

I saw this happen to a VW Baja Beetle back in 1982. The old feller hitched up and took off with the little car in gear behind his 454 powered Winnebago. He came into our shop and wanted to know how long it would take to fix it before his OL found out. We were able to source another complete motor and had it swapped out in about three hours. He was a good customer and we serviced all of his vehicles. I did the job and he slipped me a $50 bill which in 1982 dollars was pretty good.

Mistakes can be made and can be a costly lesson. Don't ask me how I know. I never calculated the rpms but I imagine at 60 mph in 1st gear it was turning close to 15,000. This was after towing my 2015 for many trips and about 12,000 miles.

Ouch! Learning the hard way

Sorry if this has already been posted. I don't have a MH so I have never towed anything behind one, but you would think he would have noticed the drag.

With a diesel and tons of torque, probably would not notice. Hard to imagine how one makes this mistake. In low range too!!!!!!!!!!

Damm!

Jeep Body for sale, cheap. Engine, transmission, and drivetrain some damage.

I call BS. There is simply no way that engine was turning 50k rpm. It would drag the tires long before it got anywhere near that rpm. It would almost certainly drag before it got to 10k.

I would guess the engine grenaded before the theoretical speed of 50k rpm was reached. I doubt it made it to 10k rpm.

As things broke drag on remaining drivetrain dininished.

X2. In low range it didn't take long from the start to crank that engine over the red line. I suspect things let loose as soon as towing speed hit 25 mph.

I don't know how the engine even started turning in low gear in low range. Must have been really down on compression...

Ever try to pull start a vehicle? The higher the gear you put it in, the easier it is, and that is with no "Low Range". You almost always have to do it in 2nd gear or higher, because the tires will drag. Again, no Low Range.

My BS detector is going off on this one, at least how the story is being reported. I would expect to see blown tires with the conditions reported in the story.
