Overnight trips

How often do you tow to stay at a place for a single night and then go back home?

How far would you tow to stay a single night and then go back home?

I have a location in NW Louisiana that we are considering visiting on a monthly or every-other month basis. We would be the only people staying at the location and everyone else would show up for the days festivities and then go back home afterwards. On top of that, we wouldn't arrive to the location until well after dark after working all day.

It would be dry camping only and a little over 300 miles, one way.

So let me get this straight? You would leave after work and tow about 6 hours. Set up that night, sleep. Next day you would have festivities, friends, etc and then that evening tow back home about 6 hours? I wouldn’t do it. It’s kinda far for just 2 nights….

2 nights for us needs to probably be with 3 hours from home max. That is ~150 miles. I typically avg 50mph towing.

I kinda agree wholeheartedly……but I only hear they’d sleep in their rig for ONE NIGHT after having worked all day. I do agree RV speeds are closer to 50th after all is said and done. For the event of festivities just for the day……just drive the family car there and back…..if it’s that important and that distance away.

What about towing 1/2 way there the first night?

Never.
The only place I spend one night is traveling on a long trip or the back yard.

At 300 miles each way, the cost of fuel alone would have me seriously considering a hotel for 1 night.

I have done it. But the Stare Park is only about 50 miles away. We do it just to break the work cycle. Get to CG around 10. We drive in, set up camp, prepare some food, watch the stars, go to bed, wake up and have breakfast. Leave around lunch time.

Keep in mind that Ken drives in kilometers, not miles, so he only has to go 60% as far as those of us south of the border. He also gets to drive 100 without breaking the speed limit.

+1 Dodge Durango towing gets 8-10 MPG! And $3.40/gal, a 600 mile round trip is $204. Meanwhile, with my Prius is would be $46.40 for gas leaving $150+ for a hotel room.

And in Oregon, I get state parks for $8.00 per reservation, from 1 single night to a max of 10 nights per 30 day periord . Disable veteran discount. Anything from a tent site to full hook-ups!

Drive 300 miles, arrive and set up in the dark, get some chow, go to sleep, get up, eat breakfast, prepare for the day's festivities, then clean up, pack up and drive another 300 miles back home?

I'd have to stay for two nights, at least.

It would have to be an important and rare event to travel 300 miles for a one night stay. Today for us for one night 25 miles would be far enough for a one night stay.

Don't forget checkout time requirements. Most spaces have an 11:00 AM to noon checkout time!

My perspective is that of a retired guy. I would never consider towing that far for one night. Like mentioned above ... I would travel light and get a motel room for that one night. If I traveled 300 miles, I would probably spend 3-4 days. The OP may have to hustle back for a job.

Festivities start at 0800 on Saturday mornings. We would both have to take Friday off in order to leave in time to make it there before dark.

Festivities start at 0800 on Saturday mornings. We would both have to take Friday off in order to leave in time to make it there before dark with the TT or leave the house at 0200 to drive up the morning of. The latter is definitely not happening.

That is a thought and what we've done in the past.

After our last hotel-from-hell experience we bought the TT so as to not have to go through that again.

Our first (and only) two trips so far have been overnighters and only ~120 miles.

At just over two hours, we found that doable as we were still going to bed at a decent hour and we were then able to sleep in and take our time.

That is a thought as well.

We'd have nothing to do the second day except sit around, though.

The festivities occur on private property. When we lived closer (within 120 miles) we would drive up every month and spend the day, then drive back home. We miss spending the day with our friends but the distance makes a huge difference now.

This would be boondocking on private property so no real time limits, but no hook-ups either.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), still working for a living.

I get every weekend off but have to make the most of it.
