My DW gave me the splitter the OP showed in his original post and it works great on any size log that you can fit in it. I don't have a small sledge so I use a full-size one and the splitter will cut through anything.

two differint process
kiln dryed is a process that lumber go's through at homdepo .

seasoned is wood that has been split up then left aside after its been split to dry for a yr...

most camp ground buy so called seasoned fire wood local at the end or close to the end of there season of camping..
this prevent the transefer of incets from other states ..

i supose kiln dryed fire wood is out there in bags also that is why you pay 6 or 7 bucks a bundle it is kiln dryed seems like a wast of energy.

i call that wood fake wood it dose not burn that well or start burning that fast lol.

just a note most parks do not alow chain saw's or cutting of down trees "that is called a habitat when you remove the wood from the forest you displace the natural life of incets and wildlife nothing pisses me off more than seeing junyor out there with his new hatchet chopping in to standing dead tree or live trees happens all to often city people an ther kids unsupervised..
you came here becouse you saw something so beautful you HAD to be a part of it so dont CHANGE IT leave it be that is why its governed that is why its a state park or national forest

and one other note all to offten people bring pallets thats right PALLETS and burn them what dose a pallet contain! "any one"? have a clue? NAILS thats right and there is nothing worse than a weekend worker bringing his stack of pallets to the forest and leaving them NAILS ALL over the ground..
just a heads up bring a magnet with you or get a flat tire.. it happens..

Every campground I've bought 'seasoned' firewood at, the wood was hardly seasoned, still quite green, and was difficult to light and smoked like hell. Guess the guy before me got the last 'seasoned' bunch.


Got tired of paying 10 bucks for one hour's worth of wood, and sneaking wood in from home like some sort of forest criminal, never looked back after propane firebowl.

Out here we can buy "mill ends" which are just pieces cut from various sizes of finished lumber when mill cuts the product to length.

Nice and dry and burns great. Bug free too.

Just tell any self appointed firewood cop they're just play blocks for your kids.

Depending on the mill if you're close one can often load up their pickup bed for free.

no disrespect but
i have knowseveral ranger's that are my friends there not there to make your day.
they are there to protect the habatat and the wild life .
the grounds we love so much to camp on.
they are very intelegent men & woman they know exzactly wair and what you are doing .
all to offten there are people doing things that are totaly NOT COOL
like bringing used motor oil in gal container dumping it all over the ground.
to start a fire.
it's not only a fire hazard it damages the eco system in the wild.
one last note ..
if you or some one is lost in the wood's THEY WILL BE THE LAST PERSONS OUT OF THE WOOD'S ..look for any one.. who is lost

If folks are bringing in their own wood to "Burn" and take home what they don't "Burn", how in the world is that going to harm the environment, terroir, habitat, or whatever else you want to call it with the exact spot where that campfire is to take place?

I have never had an issue with any ranger questioning me about where my wood came from. I believe they probably have much more important things to do.

TitanMike there is a mill like you describe 25 miles from me that used to load your truck for free with the cuts as you describe. All hardwoods, mostly oak. that got ruined by some folks who lived on the highway the mill is on selling bundles of wood on the roadside. Sorta PO'd the mill. So last I heard they would still fill your truck but started charging a nominal fee like $5-$10 per load. A good friend of mine remolded his kitchen and great room with a 20 ft. vaulted ceiling with the scrap woodcuts. Absolutely beautiful! I go to new housing developments about 3 miles from my house and pick up the scrap cut-offs from the pile assembled on what will be the front yards. I'll find perfectly good 2x4's with one bent nail in them tossed on the pile. A couple of loads in my SUV with give most of the wood I will use for a camping season.

apparently you have never had a problem with ant's or insect's of any kind in your camper?

some people load wood in the side compartment in the camper some put it in the truck bed..
if its in one or the other YOUR carrying insects right in that wood right..
kiln dryed wood is not so much a problem!!!
it transfering the wood that is not processed !!!!
aparintly you do not read the signs at the boat ramps eather it clearly says
clean you boat scale of any water born snales an what not...
becouse you will transfer that to another pond !!!
Get it just like people transfering wood from another state get it...

ANY WOOD that is not processed and comes from a nother state is in fact transfering some kind of insect to that state ....Okeeeeeee

i do not make up the camping rules
i do as i am supose to wair ever i go camping.we boondock exclusively all over.

in FACT my wife & I spend a great deal of our own time and fuel and money picking up other camper's trash that they leave be hind!!!!!

the point is these are the park & National forest Rules dont like it
bring your wood get cought and be asked to leave with out a return of your money it's simple

I do know what seasoned firewood is and how and why. I was born in the woods and spent a long long time logging and sawmilling these Ozarks and even the swamps of Mississippi and South Arkansas. I have also sold ALOT of firewood over my lifetime.

Where I live, it's all ricks. I believe it's about a half a cord. Rick is selling for $60.00 around here. N. Arkansas Mt. Home area. Never heard of a rick before moving here.
