For those who nutted it, what size is it?

Calipers and thread gauges seem like overkill.

Wow, thanks for the warning. I never thought to check that.

On another note, I have lost that silly top cover on the propane tank housing. I bought another housing and I'm old and just don't care but I taped it down with white duct tape. I never use that cover flap anyway.

I'll be checking mine this Sunday evening before heading out on my 5 day summer holiday.

Thanks,

I think mine was 1/2" as I used a 3/4" wrench to tighten it.

I just installed a 1/2" nyloc nut on the bottom of mine. I don't think it's going to move anytime soon.

I just took the 't' handle to Ace Hardware and had them size up the thread to get the proper nut.

Well, we may all not have the same sized threaded rod, which is why I suggested that taking something that is already threaded to the rod in your exact rig.

The way I'm reading this thread, based on the two examples cited, the solution is to avoid towing at less than 70 mph...

I installed the two tank tray on my new TT and everything is held on with nylock nuts plus lock washers. For the rod, I have a nylock and lock washer on top of and below the tray. So I actually have nylock nut/lock washer/tray/lock washer/nylock nut. I also have a ratchet strap wrapped around the crossbar and tray that is cinched down tight. I don't have a tank cover so whenever I stop, I give the tanks and strap a very hard tug to make sure everything is tight.

x2 on the Nyloc nuts

I had a small boat trailer rattle apart on a washboard road one time. I also had the outdrive on my boat come loose. When that happens, you have a 14" diameter hole in the back of your boat. After those two incidents, I put Nyloc nuts on anything that vibrates on land or water.

That said, it never occured to me to check that rod.

Thanks for the heads up. Note to self: 1. fix rod. 2. add to pre-leave check list.

Good warning! ⚠️

I have my tanks locked in addition to the typical attachment so hopefully even if it broke the chain would keep them off the road.

Small lock

I machined a small flat on both side of the rod and on both ends. I then drilled a small hole thru both ends to allow for a small lock. Tanks won’t fall off and even better no one will take them off.

Wow - in 20 years of towing a TT, I never thought to check my tank tie-down beyond initial tank installation. I will now. The mind reels considering the possibilities if things had gone really south. Propane tanks dancing around under your trailer, then exiting on to the freeway, taking out car or two ....

Thanks for sharing.
