if I may ask,where do you spend most of your time from Nov-May? We only do
Jan-Mar in Florida state parks.

We spend the first few months in the Charleston, SC area. We have Grandkids there. After that we head for Alabama, as we have friends near Ft Rucker (I was a helicopter pilot). From there we head a little Northwest to Birmingham, AL, as we have more Grandkids there. From there we are on our own and go to Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Virginia, Kentucky, and into Ohio, then home along the Lakes. We have lots of favorite parks along the way, but try to visit a few new ones every year.
We avoid Florida (except for the handle) and 99% of the time stay at State, Military, or Federal Parks (senior discount..LOL).
I'll be happy to send you our itineraries for the last few years, send me a PM with an email address.

If you plan to camp with this couple, you're going to have to make reservations for the time you plan to camp together. Your alternative is to camp alone or take a chance on finding reservations at the last minute.
My guess would be that they have been frustrated by not finding a good camping spot at the last minute.
It's actually pretty smart to make reservations. Usually you can cancel reservations or change the dates if your plans change. Some of the smaller places don't even require a deposit or credit card to make a reservaton.
Just make certain that you know the cancellation policies for each campground.
I confess to being one of those people who plan the next years camping trips in advance. I enjoy making plans and we frequently travel with another couple. I send them our plans and they are free to join us or make other plans. You should not feel pressure to make reservations and perhaps you need to have a friendly discussion with the other couple and tell them you'll join them when you can. (Then pray for campground cancellations on those days.)

When you work for a living, you deal with this. Most places you get 2-3 weeks a year at a specific time. That's how you have to plan your vacation/reservations. We work at a hospital where we can get off just about anytime (if we have the time on the books) with a reasonable notice. With that being the case, we plan just about our whole summer in early winter, then submit our vacation requests accordingly. That's how we've been dealing with camping reservations for quite a few years now. But that's going to change for us here in about 9 months, if you know what I mean. No, not another baby.  Retirement.

Do what works best for you but it might be challenging for all if everyone is not on the same page. Might consider pairing up for less in demand places.

Right now, I'm more concerned with whether our "winter home" will still exist in a few days.
You make reservations as far in advance as they will let you. Cancel if you can't make it.
For many years, and forever into the future, there are 10,000 people retiring every day. I'm convinced 9,338 of them are buying RV's. If you want to RV, you'll have to figure out how to deal with that.
For those that have rules on how far in advance you can book, or how long you can book for, you just have to learn the rules and play the game. It's not cheap, for sure. If you are still working, I do have empathy for you.
