Well, don't rat me out, but I had a structure built here by Lowe's (contractor). Lowe's and county said, 5 foot setback. That would have put the struxcture in the middle of my less than 1/4 acre lot. The contractor put it about 3 feet. Sits nice and pretty. It's in a "4-corners" area where 4 lots converge, no one is at risk. The county inspector came out to close the permit. I was at work so we talked via Ring doorbell, told him the gate was open and he could go look. He told me, nope, I just need to know if it's on blocks or on the ground. Me: it's on blocks, Him: Have a nice day! LOL!!! YMMV. EVERY county in America is different. I obviously would NOT recommend that you do what I did, COVID actually helped in this situation. LOL!

Ask for a variance
Your city council (or equivalent in your town) will have a way for businesses and individuals to request a variance from a rule/statute/law/building code.
Ask about it, learn how to request a variance, present it to the appropriate governmental body or representative using the proper procedure.
Then sit back and wait. You might be turned down, so be prepared to be disappointed; look for other options while you're waiting.
But you might be pleasantly surprised, and learn a variance from the code will be granted.
Be sure to "play the game" that gives you some kind of advantage. Do your research about the people who make the decisions for variances. Learn who they are, and who they have for bosses/superiors. Maybe you'll have an "in" with one of them.
Discover what are their worst/busiest days of the week and times of the day. Don't contact them during those worst times. But also, don't hit them up right before they go home for the day, or are at lunch or on break.
It never hurts to be kind and thoughtful when you're going to ask someone for a favor. While you'd never bribe someone for that political favor (that's illegal--you could go to jail and/or be fined for it), it's not out of line to be nice to them. Remember that you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Apply that to your pursuit of a variance; you could discover your awning will be allowed.

Maybe this would work for the OP. We are considering it ourselves since we aren't legally allowed to have an RV port.
