RV Plus card hacked

I received an email the other night from RV Plus stating I was at or near my charge limit ($2500)

I immediately logged onto my account and sure enough I was now 1 cent away from my credit limit ($2499.99). 3 separate charges all at the same Pilot in Miami over a 2 consecutive day period.

Card has never left my hand, never used in the store, just at the pump so obviously my card was scanned at the reader. I am usually very careful about this at normal gas stations but I think (actually I know) I was not as cautious at the Pilot terminals. Never again and I will check vigorously for a slip on scanner and cover the keypad when entering my control number.

They are going to back out the charges and there must be a rash of this going on as the rep I talked to said they just received an email from higher up to look for these issues and email info to them.

Check your accounts. They did not notify me until I was almost at my credit limit.

Sorry to hear that. Fortunately, when my credit card was hacked, USAA caught it immediately. They blocked it within minutes of the weird cahrge and called me right away. Glad they did. Too bad pilot/flying J didn't do that for you but glad they are working with you.

Wow sorry to hear that. I hate thieves. I'm starting to be more cautious at the pump these days but I hear that the thieves are getting better and actually opening up the pump displace and hacking into the system instead of adding the skimmer.

I have all my credit cards (3) and debit cards (1) notify me via TXT and EMAIL for any charge over $20 and any charge made without the card physically present at the point of sale. More often then not my phone goes off as I am walking away from a POS terminal. Can be a pain, but I know when my wife charges something too.

I literally have called the card issuer within minutes of a fraudulent charge and had the charge reversed and card turned off and another card issued and sent to me within 1 day following a fraudulent charge.

This is easy to setup on the CC issuers web site. ALERTS...

The DW had her debit card hacked and it was caught in just a few hours. She never lost her card but when she used her card near Roanoke VA and another charge came in from Winston Salem NC it sent up a Red flag.

Fortunately we ended up being out nothing. Still do not know how they got and used her number.

Cypress - Don't understand your response. I was asking B&B why he would only use cash when he comes back to the US. Since he says he would only use cash in the US, he's inferring that he uses credit cards in Canada and he's OK with using them there, but would only use cash in the US. The implication to me was that he doesn't think anyone would hack his cc in Canada. Hence my question.

I was notified by my bank of several transactions out of state and if they were mine. They weren't and I was refunded the charges and sent a new card.

I decided to contact the vendors and actually found the guy who was using my credit card number. I got his name, address, phone number and age (16). I reported it to the bank and they said they were not going to do anything because it wasn't worth it.

That's why these guys do this. They know that they will not be prosecuted if the amounts aren't extravagant.

After a few weeks of stewing, I called him and carefully without saying so, "implied" I may be with the police and that they were coming to arrest him. Since we had to track him down the charges would be extensive. He sounded quite upset but I told him if he came down, turned himself in, give the credit card number and a list of the charges with where he got the number, he would be appointed an attorney free of charge.

He asked if he was going to be jailed and I said, not for the first offense. I told him to inform his parents, (he said, he only had a mother) and to have her drive him down.

I don't know what ever happened after that but I felt a little better.

There are credit card number generators that some thieves use. I had a card that was never outside the house. I saw a charge on it from a Dr. in Idaho for $1.48 (what can a doc do for $1.48?) and then a charge from a porn site in Spain. I called the CC company and reported it and they told me that the guys using the number generators will make two small charges to verify the number is good then they slam the card with the big $$ purchases.

I had to get a new card a couple months ago - the CC Company notified me of possible fraud on the card and that they were sending out a new one.

Of course it is a PITA to have to change all the auto bill places like Netflix and Hulu when that happens.

Just a word of caution: Don't use your debit card as a credit card. If someone hacks your credit card you can deny the charges and then work it out with the CC company. BUT, if they hack your debit card they can drain your checking account and you may have no money to live on until the bank decides to replace your money. Sometimes they replace it immediately but other times they may delay for weeks while they investigate. It happened to my wife before we were married and suddenly had no money for gas, for food, for anything. They waited 30 days before releasing her funds.

A lot of this going on here in Austin. They are even Bluetooth connected and get your number and password immediately. DON’T use your debit card just go inside to pay.

I have the same, but you may want to lower the charge amount. Many times, thieves will do a test charge for a small amount first to see if it will go through before they make the larger purchases.

I can't speak for B and B, but as a fellow Canadian, when I fill up I tend to use Interac, not a credit card. Also, a lot of our terminals are setup for RFID 'tap and pay' type of transactions. Nothing that can be skimmed with an EMV purchase and since you don't enter the PIN, nothing for them to get their hands on. Good protection measure against skimming, but it's a loophole that leaves you exposed if your card gets physically stolen. I was out for dinner once with some friends when one of them had her wallet picked out of her purse. By the time dinner was over and she realized it, they had already used it at a gas station to fill up 3 different vehicles and a number of jerry cans, then just left the card behind right there at the pump.

To your original question, yes, we have hackers here too. The one time our card got hacked we happened to be in Disneyland at the time, but the fraudulent charges where from where we live, so it was a local job. Thankfully for that one the CC company spotted it and put a hold on the charges.

I've had issues at Pilot/Flying J as well. Had a credit card declined there while filing up for a business trip. Went in to the cashier to see what the problem was and was told the card was reported stolen. I was asked for my ID but the cashier called the manager. You could hear them arguing about whether to confiscate the card and call the police. The manager then asked me for another form of ID, so I showed them Texas CHL (now LTC). That did the trick. They handed me my licenses and credit card, so I went home, logged into my account and checked the activity. Sure enough, there were a number of bizarre charges in Iowa (I live in Texas). Called the bank (Wells Fargo) and they were very helpful. They cancelled the card and issued a new one. I had to use my debit card on the trip (which could not be delayed waiting for a new card.


Only goes to show that it can happen anywhere at any time. Keep a close eye on your accounts and bank statements.

Had my American Express card skimmed by waiter in Detroit and within a couple hours charges were made at Sunglass Hut in Ohio. Later a night at hotel there. Alarm went off when the thief tried to charge a riding lawn mower on a reproduced card. The cc company ate upwards of $1000 in charges. Apparently there have been several restaurant waiters skimming cards and selling numbers to thief who can reproduce the card.

If your card has the chip on it , do yourself a favor and get some RFID blocking sleeves. They can scan your info from 15 feet away , go home and put all your info on a new card. The chips are read like chips you put in your pets. Only pull it out of sleeve just before you swipe it.

Why are Americans so slow to adopt basic CC security such as Chip and PIN. They were years behind the EU and Canada. Then when they did it they still persisted in using this stupid postal code validation which is like using a public registry as a your security code. I have no sympathy for the CC companies and large retailers who persist in this lack of security to satisfy their own short term profit gains at the expense of the consumer.
