RV Trip out West

Anybody ever taken an RV trip out west for an extended period with their family? I am planning on taking 5 weeks next July to do this. I am leaving from New Hampshire and hope to go through the Black Hills of South Dakota, Yellowstone in Wyoming, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, and into Colorado heading east. Does anybody have any suggestions and is 5 weeks enough? Are there other places I should also check out? This is my 1st posting, so I am just starting out looking for information. Thanks!

I don't know what your itinerary is but if you happen to be passing through the Texas Panhandle, Palo Duro Canyon is an AMAZING place to spend a couple of days. They put on a play "Texas" almost every night in the state park there that is really neat. Other than that I've got no other suggestions. My RV'n so far due to family and job has been limited to the Great Nation State of Texas. The summer of 08 we plan on doing Orlando. That'll be our first outa state'r.

I can't help you out with camping but we took a trip out there several years ago and noticed a lot of small campgrounds dotting the countryside. We had flown and drove a rental car and stayed in motels this trip as we only had a week. One of these days we will return for an extended trip. You may find 5 weeks is not enough. There is a lot of distance between places in the west.

Try to include Utah in your plans. There are several National Parks there and all are worth a visit. We particularly enjoyed Bryce Canyon and Zion. There are several others we did not have time to visit. Both rims of the Grand Canyon are also worthwhile as the two sides gives a different perspective of the canyon and its environs.

That's a long trip from the White Mountains! I've never done the "go west" thing, always north-south, but a co-worker just came back - Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Vegas, A LOT of great places. He was a little over 8 weeks in all, but I don't know what pace he took.

I always prefer a 300-350 mile a day itinerery for a fairly casual vacation, and often used CAA (AAA in the states of course) to get those great Trip-tic maps they prepare, spelling out all the spots we feel we need to hit.

But without personal experience, I can't give much good advice. I'm sure some of our members can though.
