RV Water Hoses - 1/2 " or 5/8"?

As a new member to RVing, which is the better water hose to use - 1/2 or 5/8 inches?

I learned the hard way. I got "nice hoses". Posted a pic. Someone said "Hey, those are 3/8" hoses".

Duh. Yep, they were. *slapping head*

So I got more hoses.......5/8"......from these folks. If you need it, they got it.

be careful to get hoses marked "for potable water".......

5/8" equals more volume. Good to have more volume

Ok - Last question - will a 25 ft. hose length be sufficient in most Rv Parks? - Thanks

No way to know. I have a 25, a 50, and a 10 that goes on the camper side of the outside water filter. I've yet to connect both 25 and 50, but I have used both at times.

Buy two 25 footers, use what you need.

I carry two 25 and one 35, never know when it will be handy.

A 1/2" hose 25' long @ 40 psi = 24 gpm.
A 5/8" hose 25' long @ 40 psi = 44 gpm.

There is quite a difference there.

I have two 25' 5/8" potable water hoses and until a couple weekends ago I've never needed but one of them to make it to the water faucet, but on that site the pedestal was at the back of the site and it took every inch of both hoses hooked together to reach. I was sure glad I had that second hose. So, as said above, you never know.

I plan on buying a third hose just to be safe. I'd definitely recommend getting at least two hoses.

keep in mind, you're in an RV not at home in a house, we carry a 10' and 25', ... both are 1/2" and provide all the water and pressure we could ever want, a 5/8" hose is just more bulk,... I use the 10' if I can, the 25' if I can't, and the 35' if needed,.....

I had been using 5/8 for the last 3 yrs and needed a new hose on our current trip and got 1/2 cause they had lots of it and a good price. I haven't noticed any difference over the 25 ft I have ran it...perhaps I would over a longer distance. Keep in mind that as soon as the water reaches the trailer plumbing it's all 1/2 inch anyhow.

More bulk?!? Come on, man! We carry two 25 footers. Most of the time one will work, but sometimes I hook up both just to be able to put them under the RV and out of the way, depending on where the pedestal is.

yes, a 5/8" hose is more bulk than a 1/2" hose, duh??.... to each, his own!...... maybe you need a large hose?,.. but all of us aren't towing a 32', 9,000# 5er,..... so for some of us, a small hose works just fine!.... and I would also imagine that thru that large hose you only get "all the water that you need", and to your surprise, we get the very same amount thru our small hose, thru it we get "all the water that we need",... how about that? .......

And all your fixtures are most likely water conservation fixtures at 1-2 gpm. You could turn on every faucet in the rv wide open and still not reach 24gpm. In addition if you're in a site without sewer, do you really want to fill your holing tanks that much faster and have to either pull down to the dump station or use one of the dump dollies?

So you figure using a larger hose will cause your holding tanks to fill up quicker? I think maybe I will switch to a 1/4" hose then.

If you manipulate the fixtures and remove the water saving portion, yes they will because you can then supply 44gpm.

you can use a fire hose if you want, you are still limited to the same flow from the small pipes and low flow faucets inside the RV

To the OP

Bottom line is you will have the same water flow out of your faucets whether you use 1/2" or 5/8".

If that's true, and if outside flow is immaterial, then why is a regulator suggested to be put in the line outside????????????????????
