The incident was reported on the gas stations facebook page. So we know it was a true story.

Besides it's winter and we have nothing better to do.

I resemble this remark! Thanks for your patience of Newbies from a fellow Michigander!

Being in a hurry with an RV is a very expensive lesson to learn the hard way.

Generally when someone has an incident like this and they have to pay the expense to rectified the situation, they generally learn from their mistakes...

Wouldn't you think that the gas station would have had a lock and some security around their fuel inlet? That's crazy to think that anyone could dump anything into their fuel tanks.

We are all just seconds from something like this happening to us, no matter how experienced we are when driving or pulling an RV.

Last I heard the total bill for damages to trailer, fire hydrant, and tow truck costs to lift the trailer off the fire hydrant and its protective post was in excess of $25,000.
The new trailer appears to have a California temp tag, could explain part of the story.

No lock on this underground tank.

I’ve worked at different fuel stations over the years and none of them locked their tank covers. Of course, the clientele seemed different in the awareness arena.

We've been RVing for around 40 years starting with popups with the kids and made our share of minor mistakes. But I still find it fun, after we get set up at the campground, to sit back with an adult beverage and watch the newbee's! Best one so far was an angry motorhome owner who was asked to leave the campground for poor conduct after he was confronted about his nuisance dogs. He decided to leave in a mad hurry, forgetting to roll up his awning. Left it wrapped around a pine tree on the way out and never looked back. Gonna be even more fun with all the new newbees
