Well, after checking other news sources, it was not resting on the rock. But the front axle did get caught on the lip of the bridge which probably helped.

Y’all, I’m impressed with the trucker who secured the truck to his rig with his chains. First of all, he had to have the presence of mind to even think to do that. Then he had to lean over and secure those chains to the truck. And I’m pretty sure his view was pretty, shall we say, exhilarating at the time, too. And I can’t imagine he had a ANY training at all!

I just have to point out that, had this been a half ton truck, the cause would have, with absolute certainty, been an overloaded situation. But since it was a SRW 1 ton, we can blame it on something else. I’d also like to point out- the thought of it hanging by the chains isn’t the scary part to me. Remember that those chains are attached to the trailer via a piece of sucker rod that isn’t heat treated or forged and is just welded under the tongue!

Perhaps that "something else" was complacency caused by the fact it was a 1 ton p/u and the speed was a little high for the conditions. Maybe that "1/2 ton driver" would have been driving a lot slower.
Like someone said in another thread recently "just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it (or that it's wise).
Think about the times you are driving along the highway at a reasonable speed only to be passed by someone well over the speed limit towing their trailer along with a 1 ton.
Was that the case with this accident? Don't know. I do know that in the interview aired on an Idaho TV station, he driver did admit that they'd encountered some wind issues earlier.

The 'weak link' imo, is not the chain or where it attaches to the pickup, but where the chains attach to the camper. One good twist and the weld and bar will snap off the camper tongue. that couple was very blessed that that tongue bar did not snap off.
Every Semi has a tow bar in the front so the Semi can be 'pulled' and not do any damage to the cab or frame. That pick up was going no where if securely chained to that tow bar.
Full Timers... 'Homeless'..... that is what 'insurance' is for. They have their lives and the lives of their dogs. We have no guaranties of tomorrow. they have been given an other day and I am sure that they will make the most of it.....

Safety chains saved two people
Authorities say a set of camper trailer safety chains and quick, careful work by emergency crews saved two people after their pickup truck plunged off a bridge, leaving them dangling above a deep gorge in southern Idaho.
Idaho state police responded to the accident at about 2.45pm on Monday, said Lynn Hightower, a police spokesperson. A trooper found a man and a woman inside the pickup truck that was dangling, nose-down, off the side of the bridge spanning the Malad Gorge.
The gorge is narrow but is roughly 100ft (30.48m) deep below the bridge, roughly the height of a 10-story building. The gorge reaches about 250ft (76.20m) deep at its deepest point.
The only thing keeping the 2004 Ford F-350 pickup from falling was the set of “safety chains” attaching the 30ft camper trailer, which remained on the bridge, to the pickup. A state trooper and local sheriff’s deputy first used an additional set of chains from a nearby semi truck to help support the dangling pickup truck, holding it in place until additional rescuers with cranes, rope rescue gear and other equipment could arrive.

I saw the news item about it. Unbelievable and really lucky. They should be buying Lotto tickets on the way to church. It was akin to a TV rescue show only lacking the dramatic music.
