Seasonal camping slide question

Folks...family situation requires us to put our travel trailer on a seasonal site this summer. I am bummed because I really want to be on the road more but I am making a concession for this season.

Our TT has one slide, the slide does not have a slide topper on it. The camper will be on the site from early April to Late October. Can I/Should I leave the slide out all summer, or should I open it when we are there and close it when we leave?

Would anyone recommend installing a slide topper?

Mine stays open 4 months. I do have a topper and would recommend one. keeps standing water off. Keeps standing leaves and tree debris off. Help keep the interior heat down. Keeps the roof clean.

X2 on leaving it open.

X2 on getting the slide topper.

I put the toppers on myself. Super easy and very cost effective rather than having a dealer do it.

How much clearance do you need from the top of the slide to the top of the TT? My slide comes up pretty close to the roofline.

I set my rail that the awning slides into that mounts on the side of the trailer at 3.5” to center of the rail. With that being said it puts the awning at about at 30% slope. So you may be able to go less but you’ll definitely what the awning to slope so debris, water or snow can roll off.

Depends on the topper. I'm guessing 4" to 6 "

Guess if it is not enough of a slope I could throw something like a partially inflated beach ball under it to create a slope left to right on the slide.

I'm on a seasonal site and we leave our slides out all summer long.

I'm in the minority about slide toppers but I don't have them and don't really see a need for them. Just one more thing to worry about.

I've read all the posts about the different ways people have come up with to try to get them to stop flapping in the wind, to stop water from pooling on them, how to clean the slide roof underneath the topper, etc...

More trouble than they are worth IMO.

I always close mine with topper or not! Talk to tech at rv lot he said he would put them in if not there! You don’t know when a leak could happen and the slide out would act like wing if a big wind would occur and it could catch and turn over! That makes sense! I always close mine if going to be gone for a week or more!

I'm not an engineer or all that familiar with aerodynamics and what not but this doesn't sound plausible at all.

I've seen trailers tipped over/moved by wind but it takes a lot. And most of the time everything around the trailer has been blown down as well.

I can't imagine leaving a slide out would be the difference in the trailer tipping over or not.

Maybe not but it would make difference imo it can’t get water in through a closed slide it only takes a second to open or close slide

Our Jayco sat on a seasonal site for three years before we bought a Park Model. Three slides out for six months. No toppers and no issues or worries. I did clean them a couple times a year. No Worries

i say if you have room on the inside to close it you do
you never know what kind of storm will drew up when you are not there
had friend that was camping when such a storm came up and it blew so hard it pushed rain thru the seals

my mato is better safe than sorry
we do leave ours open while at home but we do watch the weather and react accordingly
