Smoke detector goes off when cooking every time

Even if I'm just boiling water, the smoke detector will go off every time and yes, my stove exhaust fan is running. I've gotten to the point where I remove the smoke detector battery whenever we use the stove for anything.

Is this normal?

I don't think it's normal BUT it's the way ours works. When it goes off for very little reason, I have to fan it with a serving tray about 3 swipes then spend some energy keeping DW from knocking it off the ceiling with a broom!

A smoke detector in an RV is the epitome of stupid. I know, regulations; but seriously, every campfire or cooking event, set mine off. It is now in the trash bin, in a long forgotten park. The Co2 detector will go off if exposed to thick smoke.
We put an extra extinguisher in the bedroom so now have 2, just in case.

The smoke detector at my parent's house goes off when I take a shower and open the bathroom door. The steam and humidity is what causes the problem.

If your CO detector is mounted low (6 inches above the floor) like mine is by the time it alerts you might not have time to react. RV's go up in flames like magician money (poof). Smoke rises and fills the interior from the ceiling down so a smoke detector at each end of the RV might be a good idea. One installed close to a stove probably not a good idea. JMO.

Did you undo the locking tabs on the vent flap on the outside of the RV. If not the fan wasn't exhausting anything. Also don't forget to lock the vent flap when you travel or it will be blown away at highway speed.

I haven't had issues with the smoke detector, but thought of your post today while waxing the RV. Mine has tabs too. What is the correct way to remove them without breaking them?

Just press upward very firmly with the flat of your thumbs while rotating your thumbs to push the flap outward. It may take more force than you think you need but mine have not broken yet.

The detectors also turn on with a large temperature change. Make sure your range hood vent is opening on the outside after you turn the fan on.

I remove the 9v battery until dw makes me put it back.

If it keeps alarming, just replace it with a new one from a hardware store.....

Mine was (was) mounted right above the stove. It went off every, and I mean every time we cooked.
It is now mounted on the side wall about 6" from ceiling above the dining table. No issues since.

Just a note on range hoods not all exhaust to the outside my 3029W Windjammer has a recirculating range hood witch makes it worthless for anything but having a nice light over the stove!

Agreed, replace it. Get one with a silence feature. This allows you to cancel the alarm for a preset amount of time without having to remove the battery. I would also wager that different brands of alarms have different alarm thresholds (i.e., will go off with different amounts of smoke). Maybe the one you have is hyper sensitive. The smoke detectors in planes will alarm with vapor and even super high humidity. That is why vapor sticks and ecigs are not allowed to be used on planes.

Hi, this is DW...I rarely use hood vent. I always open/turn on exhaust fan in kitchen ceiling and also open the small window in kitchen. I don't know if you have this option when you cook, but it helps.

yes...i have heard that some wives use the smoke alarm instead of a timer !!.....and now the flames are gonna burn me .

Check Home Depot. They have all sorts of smoke alarms. Some are specifically made for kitchens (maybe those aren't as sensitive to the kitchen odors).

This has happened to me several times. Vent fan open and working. I had to replace some detectors in the house. They came with little "shower caps" for dust or painting. I just cover the trailer detector, if there is a problem, then remove and store when finished.
