So, exactly what do you DO when camping?

So, I'm sitting here thinking about getting the 831RLBSS out this spring.

But, what exactly are we going to do while camping?

I've been away from it for many years, but most of my memories are of watching hte camp fire and lazing about mostly.

The wife (ahem, new wife) is into hiking with our two large dogs, so she's got a plan.

Me?

I'm pretty busted up (every chair in the house either heats or vibrates) from more than a decade of military SAR. I'm still game to try things like kite boarding/skydiving/etc, and I can still move and play sports. But I have a more extended rest period compared to when I was younger.

For example, I can still hustle my VF750F Honda Interceptor down a twisty road, but it better not be further away than about 20 minutes or I'm done. Here's a gratuitous pic of my ol' hoss:


Love that bike. I'll probably put it in a plexiglass case when I finally can't ride anymore and make it a bar or something. But I digress....

The Flagstaff is fairly well appointed (TV, radio, etc), but I'd like some other ideas of what activities could be fun.

So, what do You fill your time with when you "camp"?

Fishing, hiking, kayaking, board games, puzzles, nothing, etc........

we enjoying hiking, biking and checking out whats in the area of where we camp. we like state parks and really try to see all we can of them. thats the day.
fire, food and beer (in moderation of course) thats the evening
we have several board games we play.

First of all, thank you for serving our country proudly.

I'm about in the same boat as you, bad back (1 surgery) and bad knees (1 surgery). I try to stay as active as I can and I over do it at times. So when we camp I do enjoy sitting around the campfire and relaxing.

I also like to fish. Crappie are always fun, but it's really fun pulling one of those big cats out of the lake on a jug line. Having a good outdoor fish fry on Sunday afternoon is hard to beat.
Usually do some swimming and we'll take the boat out.
Take walks or do some light hiking.
Play games, like Ladder Ball or Lawn Darts.
But mostly I enjoy spending time with the family and/or friends no matter what we're doing.

As much or little as we want to do. Hiking, sight seeing, shooting the breeze with other campers, looking at all the different rigs, relaxation, putter, snooze under the tall trees, fish, never had a bad meal or drink, cards and board games(pegs and jokers)
whether we are with friends or on our own we love every minute of it.
All in all the best thing we have ever taken part in.

Thanks, but I'm Canadian SAR.

However, in a roundabout way, I do serve your country as well.

I've lost count of how many sailors/fishermen from the states I've pulled from the North Atlantic.

If you're in distress and we can get to you, we're going to be there.

We're all in this thing together after all....

If we camp in the woods/mountains..we often spend the day away hiking, finding creeks, mountain biking, general sight seeing kind of stuff...

If we camp near a river or lake...we paddle the yaks, fish, take the boat and do water sports, swim...

If we camp near the ocean, we hang out on the beach, visit local towns, search for some good seafood, take the boat and cruise, fish, snorkle

Great White you got the right idea. Nothing like kicking back around a campfire. One memorable campfire I remember was at SugarLoafin campground in Leadville,CO. My wife and I were enjoying the campfire and it just got dark when some elk started bugling in field across the way. Another thing we enjoy is meeting other campers.In 2007 we met a couple from New Jersey and they have become very close friends.

well its been many years since ive been "camping" we have had a class b and class c but never really camped in them, mostly used them as mobile hotel rooms while we were vacationing in san antonio one year, pagosa springs/durango/silverton colorado another, lots of trips to see family in dallas tx, or minot north dakota.

this year with our new camper we plan on "camping" up near duluth minn. i plan on finding some trailes for my wife and i to ride our bicyles on, and do some fishing, napping or heck both at once! dont have time this year but next spring we plan on going to thunder bay in ontario heard some great things about that area.

Come out to Leadville ,Colorado in August and ride in the Colorado100 !You might see Lance. He was there 2009. To much drama for us. I'll stick to driving my F150 4x4 on the mountain jeep trails. My wife prefers horseback. Early summer you have the wildflowers and fall the aspen changing colors.

Best thing about camping is being miles away from the homestead and the "to do" list attached to it!
So, to answer the question, whatever we want or more precisely, whatever my 5 year old wants.

Skeeter, we are a bit south of you...but I could be there in a few as long as you promise the weather in the pics . Smoky is a location based screen name...we do live in the NC Smoky Mountains.

The cooking thing is key to a good camp out and a good fire...something about a campfire even on a hot summer night...

Camping for us is to get away from the city life and rejuvenate your mind. We like to walk in the trails and chat with other rv'ers. We try to find campings along a waterway and campings that are not too cramped. I dont mind giving up the electricity if I can find a spot quiet for relaxation.

Our SAR teams have served our country in the finest tradition and i'm thankful for their efforts! That being said,what do i do while i'm campin'???

-BBQ,,,EVERYTHING!!!
-play with my darling grandaughter
-chase around my darling wife
-get bitched at for chasing around the above mentioned wife
-drink beer
-fish
-nap
-drink more beer
-figure out the next trip

If the weather is nice, I like to hike with the dogs, swim or sit outside and enjoy the scenery. At night, I just like to relax, read, watch the news if I have electric, talk to the other campers, and generally forget about work, chores or anything stressful. I only wish I could do it more than 4-5 months out ot the year.
