So Bruce, exactly which screws did you end up using? You mentioned wood screws or self tapping screws, but which one did you end up using?

These came on my new camper and I asked the dealer if he could swap them to the old style. I hate how they bring the outside grime inside and if you park on the street curbside you can’t really deploy them. Also if you want the step up you can’t go in and out of the trailer. They are sturdy, they just seem like a pain in the butt.

Probably why several have commented on the glowlight steps. I looked at them but they still didn't seem solid. Sorta like the fold in kind. I've bought things and they didn't work like I thought they would and ended up removing those things. This might be one of them. We will see.

I used wood screws.

1. Did you have to cut slots in the door frame for the latches used hen the steps are in the up position? If not how do they lock into place? The steps like this ( not sure what brand) at the rv show have slots in the door frame.
2. If you get the chance can you please measure the distance between the trailer wall and the farthest point of the steps when horizontal? I park next to a wall and need to know how much “ swing room” I would need to have. I suspect that it’s more than the 26” needed from threshold to the ground. Thanks. Jay
Jay,

I just got to the camper and measured the steps for that horizontal distance you asked about. From the side of my camper to the farthest point away when horizontal during deployment, the distance is 40”. It is actually 39-3/4”, just in case that 1/4” makes a difference.

Those are definitely on my wish list. Saw the Solid step and the step above outfitted on quite a few new models. It was almost a selling point for me.
I just hope my 2013 Windjammer 3008W doesn't require any extensive modifications. CW wanted $400 + $100 for installation when i inquired about it..

Too each there own I installed the moryde step above and love them. Carid had the best price by far around $260 shipped. The whole unpacking and install took me less then 30 minutes. When your a big dude you really do appreciate a solid step under yah. I am 6’5” and 300lbs and didn’t want to walk the plank anymore. I am okay with having to clean my steps off before putting them back in.

Is that a question or a statement?

These are questions:

Have you used them before? Have you read reviews on them? Have you done any research?

This is a statement:

You can’t make a valid opinion without doing at least one of the above.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, I’m not trying to be difficult. It is a question. I do understand they are more solid for bigger people, but other than that they seem to have more problems than benefits from my limited experience with them. I was just wondering if anybody else had any other benefits that they realized when using them?

Cardinal5er, in post #27, pretty much listed every negative there could possibly be. While every point he makes is valid, each can be dealt with in one way or another without too much effort, and many of those problems wouldn’t pertain to most of us. Plus, his opinions are based on the type of camping he does, which he explains in a later post. They aren’t going to be great for everybody, but I can’t find a single thing to criticize them for with the way that I camp — I never camp in the types of conditions Cardinal5er does — i am usually on a relatively level site with no mud, while he doesn’t seem to be as picky about where he camps and sets up. He appears to be into the more “rugged” type of camping. These, obviously, are not the steps for him. But, they are for me.

I think you will be seeing more and more of these steps, so you will have opportunities to really judge them for yourself and speak with others who own them.

I have a 2015 Windjammer 3029, hope there isn't any modifications, an easy install like Bruce experienced.

There aren’t any modifications unless you consider removing the 1-1/2” wide inside piece of the threshold a modification. You remove the three or four screws holding it down to the floor and it comes right up. I’m telling you, this is a piece of cake.

Noticed it took more time for you to post pictures of the installation than to do the actual installation. Thanks much for posting this thread. Got me thinking to do this as a future mod.

quick question. when you remove the existing threshold, is there anything that covers the seam between the floor and door? i know my door is wider than the new step...i just want to make sure there is still some threshold on either side of the step install.

I think I know what you are asking: will you see a gap between the vinyl flooring and the exterior wall at each end of where the steps mount? In my case, no, but I might cut a couple of small pieces off of the piece of threshold I removed to make it appear to be the same size as the door opening.

Is this what you mean?

Bruce

I bet I could do it in 10 minutes now, after doing it once already.
